I mean OP mentioned MLP and SU as two other examples. I don't think either of those would have been NEARLY as popular in comic form only. And I don't think I'd enjoy them as much that way, especially SU.

And I honestly don't like this because the changes seem arbitrary (haven't seen much of the show, but I don't like unnecessary changes in the first place).

Based on the cartoon and toy line. (Sadly, if Hasbro makes new Jem toys, they'll likely be based on the movie, despite the fact I would give up my left arm for a Sophie-Campbell-designed Stormer doll.)
It's available through Comixology, like all other IDW comics, but not for free.

Anyway diet you could purchase it through the comixology website and app: https://www.comixology.com/Jem-and-the-Holograms-2015/comics-series/36591?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlzdC9zZXJpZXNTbGlkZXI

Ah, that's too bad. Oh well, thanks!

I know that I personally won't generally buy something without having read it first, considering how expensive comics get.
eta: remember international audiences, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)But I'm really just in it for the art. Sophie's art can lead me anywhere (though I think the coloring could be better.)

Someone did a storytime of it on /co/ (yes, really) and I was surprised at how good it was. It wasn't trying to do the "the property must grow up with the adults that were around when they were kids, therefore adult = grimdark/depressing/cynical", which really impressed me the most. I wish they'd really go all out with the colors, but eh, CMYK is not exactly an 80's synthwave-style favoring artist's best friend sometimes.
A shame more people aren't reading it, though. Sadly, the factors you listed are just enough to keep some people away from it out of a knee-jerk reaction without giving it a fair shot. I don't do fandom anymore either, but it'd be nice to occasionally talk to someone about the comic once in a while.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)I liked the original Jem designs for how very ridiculously 80s they are, but the new designs don't appeal to me at all. They're not even right-now over the top, they look like MySpace scene girls from the mid-2000s.
I think Sophie's art has got worse with time, too. I used to love it back at the beginning of Wet Moon, but now the proportions look so off to me and everybody has the same face.
