[Jem and the Holograms comic]

You had me until "and it's not obnoxious about it."

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP but why? You don't think it's possible that some comics are obnoxious about it?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon, but frankly I've been burned by too many SJWs swearing that 'THIS shameless pandering is TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!'

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I tend to think if you have to make a big fuss over how your thing isn't horrible like those other things, it sort of sends a bad message. A good product should be able to speak for itself, without superfluous disclaimers.

I have some friends who are really into this comic (and the original show) so I hear a decent amount about it, but I guess it just never caught on? Maybe cause its easier to keep up with a cartoon then a comic, idk.

I think cartoons are also more universally appealing. Most comics don't get very big fanbases (Homestuck being a glaring exception but the only one I can think of offhand).

I mean OP mentioned MLP and SU as two other examples. I don't think either of those would have been NEARLY as popular in comic form only. And I don't think I'd enjoy them as much that way, especially SU.

It's difficult for comics to become more mainstream and considering Jem is an older property, I can see why it didn't exactly catch on.

And I honestly don't like this because the changes seem arbitrary (haven't seen much of the show, but I don't like unnecessary changes in the first place).

Is this comic available online? it doesn't appear to be a webcomic

It's IDW's Jem comic.

Based on the cartoon and toy line. (Sadly, if Hasbro makes new Jem toys, they'll likely be based on the movie, despite the fact I would give up my left arm for a Sophie-Campbell-designed Stormer doll.)

It's available through Comixology, like all other IDW comics, but not for free.

There is a line of high end dolls based on the original cartoon, they might well get into the comic at some point. Given the poor sales of the movie I would think the comic is more likely at this point.

Anyway diet you could purchase it through the comixology website and app: https://www.comixology.com/Jem-and-the-Holograms-2015/comics-series/36591?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlzdC9zZXJpZXNTbGlkZXI

Maybe it also has to do with accessibility? Let's be real, a lot of fans pirate stuff. While there are those huge manga aggregate sites where almost anything is accessible, as well as crunchyroll and whatnot, it might be that for some people getting their hands on this comic is just more difficult. Finding shows streaming is also very easy.
I know that I personally won't generally buy something without having read it first, considering how expensive comics get.

eta: remember international audiences, too.

I'm a non-US fan and I subscribe through Comixology. Also, it's easily available on pirate sites. It's an awesome comic and in trade it works out at a reasonable price, but it's true that issue-by-issue really adds up.

tbh, I had never heard of this comic until now but I love Jem, so I'll probably check it out. Thanks, OP!

I never heard of this comic until now, so that might be it. But I will check it out since I loved Jem as a kiddo so thanks for the rec, OP!

It is fun, Kimber is hilarious, I love that it made the gay fanon canon. There are a lot of really great updates to the whole Jem set up, it would be amazing if it inspired a reboot tv series.

But I'm really just in it for the art. Sophie's art can lead me anywhere (though I think the coloring could be better.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, you lost me at the fucking hideous art style.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaah, I found myself not really feeling the washed out colours and the stumpy way the characters are drawn.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It is pretty different from the TV show. I kind of like that the characters' builds vary a lot. It's sort of the body-positivity fan AU re-imagining.

I love this comic! I'm an ancient Jem fan from the 80s and the comic really recreates all the best and weirdest parts of the cartoon while improving on the character dynamics. And the art is just perfect for the content.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sophie Campbell did the Jem comic? I gotta pick this up.

IDW's Jem is a guilty pleasure of mine. I missed out on Jem (born 2 years before its original run ended), so I only know of the series through cultural osmosis and watching an episode here or there on the Hub.

Someone did a storytime of it on /co/ (yes, really) and I was surprised at how good it was. It wasn't trying to do the "the property must grow up with the adults that were around when they were kids, therefore adult = grimdark/depressing/cynical", which really impressed me the most. I wish they'd really go all out with the colors, but eh, CMYK is not exactly an 80's synthwave-style favoring artist's best friend sometimes.

A shame more people aren't reading it, though. Sadly, the factors you listed are just enough to keep some people away from it out of a knee-jerk reaction without giving it a fair shot. I don't do fandom anymore either, but it'd be nice to occasionally talk to someone about the comic once in a while.

Huh, now that I know this is a thing I might check it out. Never got to watch the original show because afaik it never aired in my country, but the concept was always pretty cute.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Awesome designs" is where I disagree with you.
I liked the original Jem designs for how very ridiculously 80s they are, but the new designs don't appeal to me at all. They're not even right-now over the top, they look like MySpace scene girls from the mid-2000s.

I think Sophie's art has got worse with time, too. I used to love it back at the beginning of Wet Moon, but now the proportions look so off to me and everybody has the same face.
