Apartment question

How long before your lease is up should you definitely have a new place lined up?

There's no universal answer on this. It really depends on your situation and the housing market in your area.

I'm a student in a college town, if that helps with any kind of rough estimates?

College towns typically mean there's going to be turnover as people graduate, but those places will probably fill up again pretty quick. What kind of notice do you have to give your landlord?

I have to tell them pretty soon if I'm renewing, but I cannot afford to stay at my current place anymore because I'm losing my roommates. I've applied to other places but haven't been contacted yet. My lease is up in the summer.

Sounds like you're in a bind, but if you can't stay, you can't stay. It's probably going to be harder getting confirmed for a new place now when there's so much time until summer. Just keep in touch with landlords and ask if there's a time they typically start getting vacancies and when you should apply.

The only real answer to "when should I definitely have a place" is "before you have to leave this one." You might want to overlap a week or so so that you have time to transition and clean the old place.

Alright, thank you very much for the advice! This is the first time I'm moving on my own (I've lived in one place for a few years, and the dorms before that) and it's pretty stressful.

It really is, but once the logistics are figured out, it can be a lot of fun, too. Good luck!
