Because it's a medium with a large variety of genres for literally everyone rather than a genre in and of itself?

yeah, basically.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-03-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, you mean all anime isn't moe moe kawaii desu ne sugoi nekomimi with giant tits bouncing around hitting people with giant hammers while cherry blossoms flutter gently in the breeze?

[personal profile] iceyred 2016-03-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not. Some of it is tentacle porn.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-03-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Suddenly, the nekomimi sprouts half a dozen tentacles!

And then it also just became futa?

Then the boy that lived with hir walked in on hir bath and discovered hir secret!

"You are a tentacled futa? So was my long-lost sibling!"

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-03-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"And coincidentally you are also my senpai, and I have admired you from afar for so long that I have started dressing like a girl in order to win your heart which has lead to many and varied shenanigans and also a lot of queerbaiting!"

"How awkward! You must meet these other people who have joined my harem. There's the Dom, the Underage One, and the Drunk. Now you can join them and we can engage in really kinky, gravity-defying orgies!

...Except for the Underage One. We're hoping for an export to America."

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-03-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
lol you forget, it's not America they export them to, it's Australia.

"Only our anti gravity orgies will be able to save the world through the power of friendship!"

"If we combine our tentacle forces, we can save the Earth! And we'll get to wear mini-skirts!"

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't worry! The Underage One only *looks* underage, she's actually one hundred years old and therefore it's totally okay to bang her!'

Bingo. It's like asking why people still animate things.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but like

There's definitely a lot of specific patterns to what anime gets made and what anime is loved by anime fans

And those patterns suck

IDK about others, but I'm still finding gold among old stuff that was popular way back when but that I never got around to watching before.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Anime also has lots of tv series for little girls, with young girls as main characters. And that's freaking awesome. Compare it to American Cartoons where most of the time the main characters are boys.

+1

Having Sailor Moon as something to watch and look up to when I was 10 years old was AWESOME.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Japanese feminists disagree, and it's not hard to see why since the series for little girls are Japan's equivalent of the Disney Princess franchise (yes, nearly all of them, and no, the fact that they're not all by one company like Disney doesn't matter).

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not into Disney, what's wrong with the princes franchise?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. PreCure and stuff is all about emphasizing that Girls Must be Feminine. I mean, this is a country where all girls have to wear skirts as part of their school uniforms, no matter how cold it is. A friend of mine is from Hokkaido (way up north) and she used to get in trouble for wearing gym pants underneath her skirt because she was cold. And as an adult, she has to wear makeup at work, because you can be FIRED for not wearing makeup. Not making this shit up.

I've lived in Japan, I've seen how little girls get hardcore inundated with this shit at a young age. You'll see coloring contests at the local library or whatever where all the girls colored a picture of a pretty girl in a wedding dress, and all the boys did giant robots. And girls will write "I want to be a bride" as their "what do you want to be when you grow up?" statement.

It's very focussed on the idea that girls must like makeup and fashion and boys and pinks sparkly things and weddings and marriage exclusively. The Pretty Cure franchise is absolutely the Disney Princess of Japan.

Like you have read Japanese feminists. Try Sugawa-Shimada.
