Work thread

I've been looking for a chance to talk about/gravedance over something, so let's open it up to a general work thread.

Perfect timing. I had an interview in Columbia today. It would mean more money, and I'd move to a larger city. Downside: the place seemed a little disorganized, and I'm not sure I want the job. But I'm crossing my fingers for a second interview anyway.

Eh, no job is perfect... or permanent.

Best of luck to you!

Sidenote: Columbia is an amazing city and I hope you get a second interview if only to figure out if the job is worth it and what you really want.

I miss Columbia a lot.

Columbia is pretty cool. The zoo is awesome, they're working on bicycle infrastructure, and some of the parks are pretty neat.

I love the variety of activities because of the college and that it's the state capital. The art museum had some pretty awesome exhibits (I went to a Japanese wood block printing opening) and the parks are nice, I loved walking along the waterfront.

Papa Jazz was an amazing record store and you can find some amazing night life if you look that isn't all college based.

If you're in town again, Gervais and Vine is a great tapas/wine bar.

I took my parents to see the art museum. We all loved it. And I will be sure and investigate Gervais and Vine. If I do move there then I'll be looking for a little nightlife. :)

I always feel drawn to moving back to Columbia because housing is so much cheaper than where I am and it has so much to offer and I have friends there, but then I remember all the things that only happen in NYC, so I figure I'll just retire to SC.

Once I learn how to golf too.

One of the best things I ever did was move to SC. Inexpensive, nice greenspace, lots of parks, good food (I've gained five pounds since moving here). Moving here was a good life decision.

I need to get out of this string of shit jobs that lead nowhere good, but I'm scared my CV is probably irreversibly fucked by now.

I worked with almost nothing else, and I feel that's part of the problem.

A while ago, I complained about E, an employee on the fast track to assistant manager whom I got along with like fire gets along with gasoline. He was getting steadily worse--coming in to work late, not cleaning up after himself, being rude to the manager, and alienating most of his coworkers. But as of Monday, he's no longer a problem.

Three deposit bags full of cash have gone missing lately, and the higher-ups are really coming down on my manager J to find out what's going on. On Sunday, E was supervising K, our best salesperson, and R, a new employee. J came in to talk to them all about the missing bags and tell them to take the bag straight to the bank at the end of the night.

At closing time, K counted the money and concluded it added up. R was supposed to check her count, but he spent the whole time sweeping the floor. After she finished, K left early, leaving the money lying out on the counter next to the bag. R and E both say there were times they weren't watching the counter. When they were finished closing, E put the money in the bag and took it to the bank.

On Monday morning, the bank called the store and let us know the deposit bag was more than two hundred dollars short. E had a record of bad behavior, so he was fired almost instantly. K, R, and J all got one hell of a tongue-lashing, but they're keeping their jobs. (Just as well, since they're all good workers.)

I'm already being tapped to fill E's empty work hours. Ding dong, the witch is dead!

I hope it's a good thing you're getting the extra work hours. I hate when the company lets someone go and then expects everyone else who is overworked to pick up the slack.

They couldn't schedule me at the same time as E without us wanting to kill each other, and since E was being groomed for assistant manager, he got 40 hours a week. I was originally scheduled for 14 this week, and I was down to 8 for a while. More hours are great for me.

Isn't it glorious when someone delivers their own karma and you don't have to lift a finger?

Will they be pressing charges?

Theoreticallt, either K or R could have stolen the two hundred dollars. (Though only E was present for all the bags that went missing, which is pretty damning.) Getting the mall security tapes from the police department would cost fifteen hundred dollars (!), so I'm not sure whether corporate will bother. E is banned from the store, though.

Finally found a new job myself, making almost 50% more than I did at my last job. I can't wait to get over that horrible period where you're new and you don't know anybody or anything.

Good luck! The pay raise will help you in a lot of ways. Took me years to finally get a pay raise that made it possible for me to stop living paycheck to paycheck.

Thank you! It is nice to be paid a decent wage. I wish everyone was. I'm still just barely going to be making it as it is.

The job I do is contracted from a huge company. They had contracted it out to another company similar to ours, but then it got to be too much for them, so they subcontracted us. Just in the last month, we became equal contractors rather than sub-contractors and were told that, despite the fact that we are about half the size of the original contractors (or smaller) we are doing a better job of not only meeting the goals, but meeting them in such a way that the people *we* recruit actually stick around and continue with this company. So yay, us!

The thing that I want to bitch about is...we get way too few numbers to call, and end up calling people way too many times, thus understandably pissing them off and making it a *lot* harder for us to recruit them. We also have had issues with the program we use (from the original contractors) not working correctly for *months*, and they're just now grudgingly trying to fix it (another thing that keeps our production low).

And then we get bitchy little emails about how our production is low and I just want to stomp around and shake people and yell in their faces. FIX THE FUCKING PROGRAM!! STOP MAKING ME CALL PEOPLE THREE TIMES A DAY (though i don't actually do it, I just end the call and re-schedule for three or more days out). Just...don't hamstring us and then whine that we're not running fast enough.
