Why does everyone in Criminal Minds fic talk to Reid like he's a baby they have to take by the hand and usher through life?? I just read a fic where multiple characters informed him (sometimes multiple times) that he knows he can talk to them if something's bothering him, right?

I mean seriously, I half expected Papa Hotch to fix him a glass of warm milk and tuck him into bed.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if some of it (not all) was inspired by the show. It bugs me so much how they force each other to open up, especially when one person clearly doesn't want to talk about it - and it's never treated like the invasion it is. They generally do say that to each other in the show. A lot. (At least it's spread out more, though. JJ trying to get Emily to open up and vice versa. Garcia and Morgan. Rossi and Hotch. Etc.)

What weirds me out about this is that it never seems to work. Characters are always insisting the other person needs to talk, and they're there to listen, etc. But I feel like none of them ever do talk. They wind up saying a couple terse lines explaining what's going on, but never more. And this goes for most personal matters. I mean, I get not wanting to open up about childhood emotional trauma, but a fight with your girlfriend?

People love to woobify Reid. It's true he's young and vulnerable in the show as well, but not to the extent that he needs hand holding and a bedtime story.

This. I mean, sure, when he's going through something sad, I want to give the guy a hug and all that good stuff (hell, I feel that way whenever I see ANY character I like being sad and struggling).

But seriously, the guy's managed to withstand all the shit he's been through over the years, both personal and professional. He's a lot stronger than many seem to give him credit for.
