Fanfiction General Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
General thread for discussion relating to fanfiction, reading or writing.

I finished writing my fic series that's been going on for almost two years. There's a few weeks of posting to go yet that will give me time to finish the various edits and buffing out the dents, but my brain has felt so weird and empty the last few days.

It's time to go work on some new stuff, but the gear-change is throwing me for a loop right now.

Ugh! The dreaded nowwhats.

Still, way to go on finishing up such a large project!

I'm finding I can only write little bits of the fic I'm working on at a time. It is pretty dark with torture and rape and such. And I find that writing it is harder than reading this sort of thing and I can only handle writing a little bit at a time.

The other thing I'm working on is interesting because it is a roleplay thing. So it seems dark. It has pain play and rape play and the idea is that the fact that it was the submissive character's idea doesn't come out until the end (though I do mention a safeword at one point). And I'm not sure how I'm going to tag it when I eventually finish it.

Maybe try some drabbles if you like writing those. They don't need a lot of concentration/mental strength since they don't have any plot continuity or characterization to worry about.

Why does everyone in Criminal Minds fic talk to Reid like he's a baby they have to take by the hand and usher through life?? I just read a fic where multiple characters informed him (sometimes multiple times) that he knows he can talk to them if something's bothering him, right?

I mean seriously, I half expected Papa Hotch to fix him a glass of warm milk and tuck him into bed.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if some of it (not all) was inspired by the show. It bugs me so much how they force each other to open up, especially when one person clearly doesn't want to talk about it - and it's never treated like the invasion it is. They generally do say that to each other in the show. A lot. (At least it's spread out more, though. JJ trying to get Emily to open up and vice versa. Garcia and Morgan. Rossi and Hotch. Etc.)

People love to woobify Reid. It's true he's young and vulnerable in the show as well, but not to the extent that he needs hand holding and a bedtime story.

You know what I hate? When you get comments or reviews where the person just needs to tell you that they're always going to hate something (a character or whatever).

Like back in 2007ish I guess (it was on a journal I've long since deleted, I wrote fic about the HP epilogue kids. I got one comment where a person felt the need to tell me that "no writer can make me like those hellspawn" in their review.

Why do people feel the need to say those kind of things in reviews. If no one can make you like them, why comment on it just to point out a "fault" that the writer can't fix? It's like a backhanded way of making them feel bad or telling them they shouldn't be writing about that character.

People who do that are awful.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

I resisted the urge to tell someone I liked their story but X needed some work. Instead I left a kudos and moved on.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's bad depending on how you word it. There are ways to word it so that the blow of criticism is softened and it's spun in a manner of "this is good, but have you considered doing this, it might help" along with complimenting the touches you did like.

Really it's all in how you present it. Criticism can be a harsh, but giving it a positive spin can help send the message that you want to help their writing. Some people may still respond poorly to it, but it can make a lot of difference.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Have you considered not just softening the blow with a compliment but also wording the criticism in a way that won't make the author think it's their fault? Something like "I enjoyed blah blah blah... I did think it was strange that X did so-and-so... and maybe that bit with dog felt a bit rushed, I'd have REALLY liked to learn more about..." still sounds enthusiastic and encouraging without being abrasive.

If we're going to be doling out writing advices to people, the least we can do is flex our own writing skills and craft effective reviews.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

I would absolutely not leave even polite/constructive criticism on any A03 fic unless it was specifically asked for in the author's notes. You will get jumped on, just like those college kids who were commenting on fics a while back.

I never see criticism on fics these days. It's just no longer the done thing.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
If they didn't specifically request feedback and constructive criticism, then that seems fine to me.

I'm 8000 words deep in my Stars Wars fic and getting increasingly worried that there isn't enough...happening? There's talking and thinking and world building but idk...maybe it's just me that finds a fic that's just that interesting enough.

Re: Fanfiction General Thread

I hate those Character/Reader fics or Imagine fics or whatever they're called. What's the point? Either you have to make everything incredibly generic to fit everyone or you have to pick certain traits which means you might as well just have made an OC.

Usually I just scroll by what I don't like and at best wonder wtf this trend came from. But in certain fandoms almost nothing else gets written these days. Entire blogs are dedicated to churning out these things.

"Issue fic"

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a way to write fic that covers an issue or topic (to be fair the source material was dedicated to the topic as well, so I'm just going off of what it was doing, but trying to improve on it. I happen to have a lot of experience with the issue it was covering) without coming off as a soapboxy "issue fic" made to preach to people?

I've seen some good stuff exploring minority perspectives through in-universe concepts. For instance, today I read a fic where a character who uses prosthetics is examined from an amputee perspective. I think a lot of problems come from trying to deal with an issue in a canon where that issue doesn't really fit (like introducing homophobia into a setting that comes across as very tolerant.) Beyond that, there can be issues with twisting characters out of their established personas (demisexual Tony Stark!), or making likeable characters excessively ignorant and bigoted for the sake of the plot. Everything else is an issue of how to write about an issue in any story, canon or fanon.

I miss getting comments

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I miss getting a buttload of comments on my fanfiction rather than just kudos. Back in the day, I'd get at least ten for the smallest of drabbles and sometimes dozens for a particularly popular fic. And I was a nothing writer writing rarepairs. Now, even writing popular pairings, I'll get maybe two or three. Hundreds of kudos but barely any comments.

I know write for the love of it and blah blah blah. But when I write original stuff I get money for it, so fanfic is increasingly starting to feel like a huge waste of time.

Is there a good way to write asexual characters or should they just be avoided altogether?

I've read so many comments here, in the 'what makes you automatically stop reading a fanfic' type threads, that a character being asexual is one of those things. I've also seen other comments that it's the 'Tumblr-y' way the issue is treated that's the problem, not the fact that they're asexual.

So should there never be asexual characters ever, or is it okay if they just say they're asexual and leave it at that instead of going into a long explanation with a dozen different labels?

What do you guys think?

1.) Some of the ideas I want to write are crossing the line between original fiction and fanfiction, and I'm stuck about whether or not I should write them as fanfiction anyway.

(One idea I've been sitting on was writing a Harry Potter fanfic about George Weasley and Angelina Johnson's kids, who are canonically biracial, hanging out at Hogwarts and bonding with other mixed-race kids of canon Harry Potter characters. This idea would involve a lot of OCs though, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one whose interested.

My second idea is to write a crossover between the 2015 Cinderella movie and Malecifent through the eyes of Cinderella,. I would end up doing a hell of a lot of world building, character building, and even adding twists of my own. I don't have much of a plot beyond "here is some atmospheric political intrigue through the eyes of a naive young woman married to someone who knows better", and like my idea above, I'm not sure who else would be interested.)

2.) I have very specific, pretty vanilla kinks I want to see in my porn (expression of tactile affection, praise kink, and body worship) for a specific pairing in a specific fandom (the pairing is KageyamaHinata for the Haikyu fandom) and I want to see them exist but I don't know where to go. The kink meme is pretty quiet, and I'm not confident enough in my porn writing abilities to write it myself. Any advice?
