The woman is assuming that the man is making an assumption about her.

She's basically doing the same exact thing she's accusing him of.

Not sure if you're being deliberately obtuse here, but in the story it was very obviously her book he was talking about, so she wasn't assuming it.

I wouldn't call it an assumption if it's based on some kind of actual evidence. She didn't walk into the party and assume this guy was going to make an assumption about her, she observed the way he talked to her and suspected he assumed that he knew more about a topic he knew she was interested in than she did because that's the attitude he was taking. Even if it is an assumption, not all assumptions are equal. He had no reason to assume she needed a topic that he *knew* she was interested in explained to her, whereas she had reason to think he was making an assumption.

To add to above anon... She also thought at first that he was talking about another book that she was unaware of, so she listened to him until she and her friend realized that it was HER book. So she assumed the best until she was proven wrong.
