But Japan isn't one of the worst. Not by a long shot.

You're right that every country has gender issues. Japan has a lot. But women are legally equal class citizens and have every right that men have. While women are underrepresented, definitely, they do absolutely exist in high level business positions and government. Japan has a fairly low crime rate, and while rape is certainly underreported, it's no worse than, say, America, and rape is still prosecuted as a crime. Abortion rights are accepted.

Japan has a lot of work to do, but they are also making great strides. There is a long list of countries where women "have it worse". Maybe women aren't doing that great compared to other highly developed, first-world economic super-power countries, but it really depends on the issue.
