Re: Japan Vs the rest of the world
Re: Japan Vs the rest of the world
(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)You're right that every country has gender issues. Japan has a lot. But women are legally equal class citizens and have every right that men have. While women are underrepresented, definitely, they do absolutely exist in high level business positions and government. Japan has a fairly low crime rate, and while rape is certainly underreported, it's no worse than, say, America, and rape is still prosecuted as a crime. Abortion rights are accepted.
Japan has a lot of work to do, but they are also making great strides. There is a long list of countries where women "have it worse". Maybe women aren't doing that great compared to other highly developed, first-world economic super-power countries, but it really depends on the issue.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)I don't think Japan is disproportionately bad with how it portrays women per se (as in, sure, it's bad, but American media is pretty bad too). I would say Japan's actual issue is its continued willingness to sexualize kids in mainstream media. I like kawaii culture but there's a fine line between sexy shota/loli stuff, and cute stuff, and that line frequently gets crossed.
