In a world where honor killing is still a thing, Japan is one of the worst? I don't even think Japan is the worst in our area of the world, unless you only mean gendered issues in media.

I thought the thread was talking about gender issues in media. Guess I was wrong. In that case, no, Japan is not one of the worst though it does have issues same as any country and maybe more than some others but also less than others.

And if it's media, Japan also produces more of it than many other countries, so their issues are more easily detected due to visibility. But I will also add that Japan also produces a lot of female-centric media with girls and women in empowering roles. Growing up in a neighboring country that has little of that, I was quite thankful for it as a child.

nayrt but still, in the media? I know Japan has a problem with fanservice, but so does the West. And it's not like strong, non-fanservicey female characters don't exist in Japanese media.

I don't think Japan is disproportionately bad with how it portrays women per se (as in, sure, it's bad, but American media is pretty bad too). I would say Japan's actual issue is its continued willingness to sexualize kids in mainstream media. I like kawaii culture but there's a fine line between sexy shota/loli stuff, and cute stuff, and that line frequently gets crossed.
