I once tried to research Drow elves - is it true they were just made up by Dungeons and Dragons?

Yup, DnD has a lot of made up sub-races and one of the additions to the Forgotten Realms was Drow, I think the makers came up with a little bit of lore for them but R.A Salvatore did the main bulk of polishing out the race and what they were like.

Drow were made up by Dungeons and Dragons, but the idea of dark elves does exist in some lore, and they're similar in some respects to some of the darker interpretations of the fair folk under the hill.
