Favorite fantasy races

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite fantasy race? (And specify the fandom/source material, because different fantasy stories will give about a million different portrayals of common fantasy creatures like elves, vampires, etc.)

Elves, with vampires a close second. I've always been interested in both, but my interest in elves has very much increased since joining the Tolkien fandom. I find the other races in Tolkien interesting, but I am most interested in elves. And vampires, when they are done right, are awesome.

Elves with Drow-Elves being a particular favourite of mine as well.

I once tried to research Drow elves - is it true they were just made up by Dungeons and Dragons?

I think so, yeah.

Yup, DnD has a lot of made up sub-races and one of the additions to the Forgotten Realms was Drow, I think the makers came up with a little bit of lore for them but R.A Salvatore did the main bulk of polishing out the race and what they were like.

I kind of have a thing for the Khajiit and Argonians from the Elder Scrolls. Aside from the fact that both races cater to my playing style, I just like that "beast races" play a big part in a series that's part of a genre pretty weighed down by the standard "humans, elves, dwarves and orcs" racial makeup.

+1 for Argonians. I first chose the race because I hate swimming underwater with a breathe meter, but now always play as one.

Pokemon!

Wait does that not count?

Discworld trolls. Houyhnhnms and Lilliputians from Gulliver's Travels.

Vampires. Some days werewolves.

On a less mainstream track, I really like the Viera, Dark skinned race of all female bunny girls? Why, yes, thank I believe I will.

Also elves and vampires. I know they are the most stereotypical answers. I like elves from Germanic mythology and LOTR, and I like how they are developed in, for example, Katharine Kerr's Deverry series and Dragon Age - a little less mystical and perfect, but still fair. I don't like short elves or weird looking elves, like in Elder Scrolls. I like elves that are beautiful and graceful, but maybe not perfect, and sort of not-human - like, they aren't simply humans with pointy ears but sort of approach things differently, with a different mindset.

And vampires I like, probably for kink reasons. But I like the idea of sexually liberated vampires who are bisexual. Anne Rice gets credited for that but honestly even in Dracula, I felt there was a lot of intentional homoeroticism. I like vampires that have power limitations and have to eat people, but don't necessarily have to kill them. And aren't necessarily immortal. And making new vampires takes a bit of work, it's not just a matter of biting them. And because I hate describing clearly animated beings as "dead", I hate vampires really stressing they are dead when they are quite clearly alive. So vampirism maybe as more of a... virus?

Tolkien Elves but I also like Elves in general that are Tolkienesque (so Hellboy's Elves, etc.). I also like fairies that are the old-school badasses. Usually human-sized who are basically a kind of god. Like Maleficient in the cartoon, who's just a force of nature and evil for evil's sake (though I like when they're randomly good but still dangerous too).

But I also have a soft spot for fairies like Tinkerbell too, especially in Willow and Disney Fairies (rather than Peter Pan) and Tumbalina and Midsummer's Night Dream, etc.

Yes to elves. And fairies are pretty cool too, though I tend to prefer the mythological form where they aren't really good or evil, they are just this strange supernatural presence that does their own thing, sometimes helpful to humanity sometimes not. Evil fairies especially. I love animated Maleficent.

Gypsies!

An explanation: I'm kind of getting into the board game Small World again, and it's based around races, like Goblins, Elves, Pixies, etc. Some of the races are pretty weird. Depending on the sets you use, there are Drow, Shrooms (underground mushroom-looking people), Humans (above-ground not-mushroom-looking people, but kind of the same in play terms as Shrooms), and Dwarves. There are also spookies like Ghouls, Skeletons, & Will-o'-Wisps. Then there are Sorcerors, Wizards, & Priestesses, which are less obviously fantasy races as such.

And then there are Pygmies, Gypsies, and White Ladies. Yep, those are "races," with different abilities than the standard "Humans." And let's be honest, the Gypsies are actually super fun to play.

This drives certain parts of the gamer community up the wall. "Gypsies"? Really? Yeah, but they're just cool nomadic people. It's the Pygmies that are sort of spooky and weird in game terms--although arguably their abilities make non-supernatural sense.

So, yeah, one of my favorite fantasy races is Gypsies. LOL.

I frickin' love Hobbits. I love that they live in homes with round doors and windows, I love their curly hair and ridiculous feet, I love that their greatest power is being "meh" about power, and that their main desire is for food, peace, and more food. I love their songs. I love how consistently unimpressed they are with glory and highfalutin causes. I just really love hobbits, man.

The Not Gandalf made this the best comment. This is totally how Gandalf feels.

Centaurs, minotaurs, and satyrs are my favorites. I just love the idea of half-human, half-creature beings. The source material doesn't really matter; I like seeing everyone's different interpretations.

Re: Favorite fantasy races

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
My feeling about the original myths for these races are mixed (so much sexual violence) but I do like many of their interpretations since then. Ex.The Great God Pan by Napoli, Foaly from Artemis Fowl, and the Fantasia Centaurs.

What stories do you like?

Charr. Bastions of industry, inventors of gunpowder, fantasy-world atheists that actually make sense, and cat people with a non-fetishy design. What's not to love?

Khajiit. Khajiit forever. This one shall never play as anything else, yes?

Also from Elder Scrolls, I love that Orcs (Orsimer) and Dwarves (Dwemer) are elven races.

Sidhe. They are tricksy, precious. I like the half-world they inhabit, too. Now you see 'em, now you don't.

I like demons. The entire concept is bound up in an "objective" conception of good and evil, and it's fun to see how that bounces off of pragmatism and moral relativism if the writer's willing to give a little leeway.

Re: Favorite fantasy races

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
You are so fucking pretentious in every fucking post you make god. And moral relativism is not a unilateral thing, it's only a measure of wiggle room. Some things are evil no matter what the ~context~ is.

Also, your assumption is revoltingly anglocentric. In many, many, MANY cultures demons are quite morally grey or complex or varied from individual to individual and not "evil" across the board at all.
