I think this new obsession with pitting Saitama against every single other overpowered character out there is fucking stupid. I've always hated dumb fanboy "who would win?" type shit because it always devolves into whose Word Of God means more in the end when you're dealing with massively OP characters who destroy universes and blow planets up and stuff. But this is on a scale I've never seen before. The author for OPM himself has stated that all he needs to do is have Saitama "one punch" any problem away. That's the entire concept of this character. And he's a joke character at heart too. People are trying to compare a guy who picks his nose during fights to a series (or multiple series) where the massively overpowered guy is supposed to be taken 100% seriously.

Saitama was designed to be completely and utterly unfair to the opposition, whoever that opposition may be. I love comics and I grew up watching DBZ, and even then I know if we were to stick to the rules of the universe for Saitama he always comes out on top, without even having to break a sweat, simply because it's a parody of that exact same idea. (Comedy people? Remember that?)

The amount of butthurt fanart where Goku, Superman, etc are all killing Saitama gruesomely is so eye-roll worthy too. (Not to mention so OOC it hurts.) A bunch of them look like they took the kill-shot aesthetics and Saitama's signature boredom/no-effort and stole it directly from OPM while still proclaiming their character/series as superiour. I have no idea why people can't chill.

It's made me so fucking embarrassed to be in fandom.

Bonus Bonus Secret I know I sound totally overinvested by this time too. I'm really not. I'm just so sick of this debate showing up ENDLESSLY in OPM spaces when I'm just trying to enjoy the manga, anime and webcomic as a series and interact with other fans.

Bonus Petty!Secret: All the dumb "Goku /Superman/etc wins" torture-porn like art has made me really appreciative of the fanart where Saitama totally decimates said characters, if only because I know art like that pisses off the butthurt fanboys (and fangirls I suppose, but it's almost always dudes arguing over this in my experience).

(Look at him. If you are seriously trying to argue about this guy going up in a "totes serious match" against series like DBZ that amount to nothing but over-exertion battle porn, you're an idiot. Everything from his appearance to his costume are meant to be for fun and charming, not SUPER SRZ BZNZ wank.)

I don't read this, but if his gimmick involves punching things, why not pit him against someone who prevents their foes from getting close? It's like the old postulate that Storm can defeat Wolverine--he's theoretically way more overpowered, but she can simply blow down a building and pin him underneath.

A better comparison might be Wolverine going up against, say, Squirrel Girl. On paper Wolverine sounds a lot more impressive than someone whose power is talking to squirrels, but Squirrel Girl has an advantage because she started off as a joke character. Her entire purpose is to get pitted against stronger characters that she logically shouldn't stand a chance against and win. If you look at a Saitama vs. anyone match up and start taking it seriously then I think you're already missing the point.

If we take this seriously in opposition to OP, that wouldn't be enough. I don't think she's got anything that could actually keep him from getting close... he can jump at least past orbit.

I agree with you. OPM is supposed to be a parody. I didn't watch the anime, but I heard it somehow played him more like a stereotypical shonen protagonist. Could it be related if it's true?

The anime was pretty good at being faithful to the manga, at least I thought. It definitely kept the joke of the manga alive. The battles are extremely impressive rendered into animation though, which is what I'm thinking a lot of this WHO WOULD BEAT SAITAMA wank came from. I mean, the battles feel very high-stakes, at least until Saitama pulls his usual "eh, I'm bored now can we stop doing this?" thing.

yeah, it's so obvious that they would like to claim Saitama's attitude of "imba-ness" for their favorites. it's exactly the kind of attitude this show parodies... and most of the time they can't even boast a "deeper" personality.

I feel like it ends with an accidental date. The opposite of the usual comic fight, an attempt to make them kill each other goes completely wrong and due to misunderstanding they ask each other out. Nothing romantic comes of it but they agree to stay friends and have a great time. Also they almost by accident slaughter the bad guys in about 20 seconds. Everybody wins!

Hah, that's the problem. Everyone takes these things way too seriously, and Saitama only has the power of the joke behind his creation. Of course if you're a super salty fanboy you're not going to want to buy into the joke. There's this ass over on Reddit that literally trolls the OPM subreddit and has for the past couple months, he's a HUGE "Who Would Win: Spoiler it's always Goku" stan and oh my god it's so irritating seeing somebody miss the point so hard that they've launched themselves into the stratosphere.

Tbh I think Saitama would just be like "Fine, here, you can have the spinach, geez!" and then he'd turn to Genos "Yo, Genos check out the weird old guy, he was ready to fight me over the last can of spinach!" and Genos would write down sensei's overwhelming benevolence and kindness in his notebook because obvious that loudmouth old sailor would have been completely blown away by his sensei's overwhelming power.

I'm not even that invested in OPM, and I don't hang out around its fandom spaces, but I am so over the "who would win". Like you say, HE'S A JOKE CHARACTER, HE'S AN AXIOM. That's it.
The only logic would be to pit him against other joke characters.
