Interpreted that way by like, scholarly articles or slash fans? Not that there's necessarily much difference in terms of research lol

I guess Ponyboy and Johnny doesn't stick out to me as much because Ponyboy is the narrator and so there's less opportunity to read between the lines... then again, the novel is supposed to be his English project iirc so who knows how reliable he is.

Steve was always the most forgettable greaser to me so I can't remember what might've pinged people as gay about them.

Steve's forgettability is probably a reflection of Ponyboy's (narrator's) own biases towards him. Even so the degree to which they hang out together could be suggestive of a same-sex pairing, although more likely homosocial bonding which often happens in teenage years and can lead to sexual experimentation.

...no? I'm more reacting to something that I haven't seen in this particular thread, but seems to be rather pervasive: to wit, that if you don't think they're boning, or could be boning, or should be boning, then there is something wrong with you.

But that isn't what ayrt said? They did not say best friends can't or don't ever bone. They're pointing out a belief common fandom that best friends are ALWAYS boning, which is of course, not true.

that anon is presumably annoyed that people do queer readings of The Outsiders. Unless there's a common demand that Ponyboy and Co must be gay, I can't really see the problem.

I am annoyed by the notion that best friends must always be having sex. I do not care if those best friends are the same or opposite sexes.

New anon, but nah, I get where they're coming from. A lot of people in fandom really can't comprehend the idea of platonic, close friends, apparently? Regardless of gender, people will always assume that they're secretly sleeping together/in love with each other in canon. And they're usually so adamant about it that it seems like they think romance is a "step up" from friendship, like platonic love is lesser than romantic love, which is something I really take issue with!

I don't think it has to do with this example specifically? At least not for me. It's a pretty common fandom occurrence (and I'm huge on slash, for the record).

I think you're presuming a lot which isn't actually there, possibly because you're bringing some extra baggage to this discussion. You can be annoyed at the idea that two people can't possibly be friends unless sex/romance is involved without being annoyed that people are reading relationships in a certain book as queer. They're two different things.
