Guy from other day here - Spoilers for the Magicians

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I was asking about the Magician's book series the other day because I don't like downer endings media and I wanted to avoid starting a series that would bum me out.

I did get a very kind anon telling me that it's two downer endings and an overall bitter-sweet finale. So I was going to take that as a "Nope, not for me" but to be honest I still haven't squashed that tingle of excitement and I kinda want to go against my better judgement and start reading it.

So I was hoping I could get some advice on the following:

1. Either a list of main characters who die so I can weigh up what I know and go into the book insulated, and also knowing which characters to not get attached to. Also a similar thing for relationships that survive would be nice, so I know where to get invested in that regard.

And

2. Some details on how bitter the bittersweet ending is.

Or

3. If anyone knows any media I can distract myself with that does meet my picky needs? Those needs were: No or limited female character death. No or limited animal death. Ending needs to have the main characters not more miserable than when they started.

You do realize that Wikipedia exists for questions 1-2, yes?

You should know that Lev Grossman really lives up to his last name. These books are packed full of rape. I know that's not on your list of triggers, but it should be.

You really need to toughen up and stop bringing your beta male shit here.

I think that if you have such a long list of spoiler needs for a work of fiction, the burden of doing some hard googling falls upon you, nonny. Either that, or you stick to works in which nothing bad happens to any character at all, but I think that taking such steps to carefully sanitize your reading experience means you're missing out on a lot.

You know, a lot of people are being really shitty here (Probably just the one troll posting over and over) but I do have to say, it's really not normal or healthy for a grown up to be this fragile about fictional stuff. I don't mean this to be derogatory, but you should probably get some help, and not from f!s.

Speaking for myself there is at least two of us who think OP is being a bit pathetic.

So are people being more dickish to anon in this thread than his last thread? Is that just me? Am I also the only person thinking it might have something to do with the fact that he identified himself as a male this time whereas he didn't give any clues to his gender last time?

he wants to read the magicians which is like 90% rape. I think we all knew he was male from the start.

I didn't see the last thread. Perhaps this one was posted earlier, that makes a big difference in comment participation.

Perhaps you should look at reviews for books on goodreads or ask questions there about books. Maybe start reading young adult books or children's series as they might have happier endings and less tragic topics.

Wow. Well this was a thing!

You shouldn't read those books because they're not very good, but as to the rest of it... wow.

You're not getting your answers, I think.

Jesus Christ, the hostility in this thread. I can't believe Fandom Secrets actually think they're less reactionary and shitty than Tumblr.

I haven't read it and it doesn't sound like my thing but here's what I could glean from TV Tropes.

Book 1 has a downer ending for pretty much everyone.
Alice dies (described as pretty important and the main love interest, so major female character death)
A female character gets eaten alive.
A main character called Julia is raped in the second book.
The heroic sacrifice trope is mentioned, and it looks like it means the main character of the series.
