Re: A question: Tell the folks at home you arrived safely?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-13 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the circumstances of the trip and who it is I might notify. If I go to visit my parents, they always ask me to call them when I get home, so I do. They know how long the drive takes and if I forget to call within a couple of hours of when they can expect me to be home, they call me. Other people I might text, like when I visit my cousin or she visits me, we text each other when whichever of us gets home. I travel a lot for work and occasionally exchange texts or emails about it witklh coworkers, but mostly I don't. My parents hardly ever even know if I'm traveling for work or not and I never bother to call and tell them I'm safely at my destination or home again.

I have a great relationship with my parents but we can easily go a month without communicating in any form. I pretty much never talk to my brother except in person, because he is a terrible phone conversationalist, but we can gab for hours if we're in the same room. I used to call my grandparents regularly, but they're all dead now. I send postcards to my great uncle because he can barely hear, so calling him is kind of pointless. I talk to one cousin on the phone every few weeks, but not the others because while I like them all, we grew up far apart and just never developed relationships outside of the occasional visit/reunion/family wedding/funeral.
