the way i write two of my favorite characters (both of whom are manipulative assholes who people in canon still love regardless of how awful they are) is pretty much just me writing a self-insert with fandom dressing. i wrote a scene where a character hurt and manipulated another's emotions for a power trip and to make themselves feel better and it was just me writing a real life experience. i've been complimented on my characterization.
