Re: Let's have a video game thread

To be fair, I have to give Bioshock credit for blatantly explaining all the problems I had with the way the story was playing out, hahaha. I kept being like, "dude, I don't friggin' care about helping this Atlas guy, just move on and get out of here already." So I guess there was a reason for him not doing that, at least! But it's probably not great that my focus was on finishing the game instead of wanting to see how it played out.

I'm brand new to Metal Gear Solid, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it (I actually just finished MGS3 the other day). If Deus Ex is at all similar to it, I'll probably like it a lot.

Yeahhh Bioshock's main plot was kind of pants, really. I liked that it tried to present a meaningful exploration of laissez faire capitalism and mid-20th century human hubris, but it was so ham-fisted about it. BS2 tackles its particular themes much more even-handedly. You can skip BSI, though I recommend sitting through it at least once to do the DLC.

MGS is a great series! I got into it with MGS1 oh-so-many years ago; I plan to do a series replay of it and Deus Ex this year. I've not played the new one, so it'll be interesting.

I already own Bioshock 2 & Infinite, so I'll get around to playing them eventually. I've heard the second one is better about its themes, so I look forward to that!

MGS is super interesting to me because it seems so popular, but it also seems so unique? Like, usually when you're playing older games (or older media in general) you can tell how it'll go by all the more-recent stuff that's been obviously influenced by it, but I never really get that feeling when it comes to this series (which may just be because I haven't played very many games, of course). The fourth-wall stuff, especially!

I think you'll enjoy Thief and Deus Ex, then; they share very similar design philosophies despite being different kinds of games. No fourth-wall breakage, but definitely a strong sense of place and internal consistency :)
