Re: What is a furry?

Why?

That's like saying you're not a femmeslash fan unless you write f/f smut.

I've known lots of furries that don't do the sex thing. There's definitely a 'mainstream' furry culture, but not all furries fit into it, just like with every other group.

Well, because if it's just liking talking animals, then any fan of Disney movies in the entire history of their movies is automatically a furry, which isn't really ever how I've seen it used?

Every little kid who goes to Disney World and likes the costume characters is a furry, too!

No, that's not an apt comparison.

Liking one canon f/f ship doesn't mean you're "a femmeslash fan."
Liking one canon talking animal doesn't mean you're a furry.

Do you like femmeslash and f/f couples as a whole, across genres and canons? Then you can probably say you're a femmeslash fan.

Do you like the talking animal or humanoid animal genre as a whole, across genres and canons? Then you can probably say you're a furry fan.

Possibly a good comparison here would be Mecha, which is a genre that crosses over multiple publishers, distributors, and countries.

Yes, that's a good comparison also. Just because you're into pacific rim slash, doesn't make you a "mecha" fan.

Ehhhhh, that's debatable.

The majority of my favorite characters in most fiction tend to be the ones who are non-human, oftentimes the anthropomorphic ones (either straight out furry-esque, or heavily inspired by animals), and I have my own characters that are vaguely anthropomorphic-inspired. But I don't consider myself to be a furry.

For me, a furry is someone who adopts the whole thing as as their "lifestyle", so to speak. Like they're super active in the fandom, they use certain terms to refer to people (like "mate" for a partner/spouse/significant other), and frequently participate in furry conventions, Furcadia, etc. Those kinds of things.

I wouldn't call you someone that likes talking animal or humanoid animals as a genre then. I would call you someone whose favorite characters happen to be anthro.

As someone said above your favorite animes can happen to have mechas in them but that doesn't make you necessarily a mecha fan.

There are "lifestyle" people in every fandom though. Maybe it's the case that the "lifestylers" are now the fandom, but that wasn't always the case and I'm not certain whether those shifts are good.

Originally fans of anthropomorphic art across multiple publishers and genres. Erotica and yiffing optional.
