I have to say, as a man, I find it a little disturbing that this fetish is so relatively common in women, at least women in fandom.

You know how it's creepy as hell when a woman's being tortured or killed and it's all sexualized and filmed like it was a sex scene, and it makes you think "Jesus Christ, are men getting off on watching this? Do they fantasize about me in that way?" It's like that.

I've never had the issue of fictional men ruining me for other men. Fiction and fantasy are just that. I can still be attracted to real men. Sure, I like elves a lot (and Ainur too). But that is fiction and it doesn't affect my real life attractions.

Though I will say that I kind of agree with you that while I liked some of the movie portrayals of elves acting wise, they didn't really capture it exactly. Though I felt like Galadriel and Arwen and Thranduil came closest.

I'm also with you on the body hair, though there are some men who don't have as much body hair, and some men even get it all removed. I can live with a certain amount, though. I just am not attracted to really hairy men.

I think it was reasonable to expect it to be good. Because I think one of Rowling's main strengths in HP was her ability to assimilate a bunch of different sources and genres into an interesting, more or less coherent whole. It just turns out that skill isn't transferable and only really works when it's stuff she's been familiar with since childhood - but I don't think it was crazy to hope she'd be able to do the same thing with America. It was wrong in retrospect but not crazy.

Elrond is one of those characters I can't read in sexual situations. I feel the same about Rupert Giles from Buffy. It is that he reads as a paternal figure to me and I can't personally combine that with wanting to read about him having sex.

...Why are you still talking to this person? They sound unpleasant. They go on angry rants about other people's ships and believe in a strictly designated top and bottom in m/m relationships (which is almost always rooted in some creepy sexist or homophobic beliefs).

This is one ship I just can't do. I love the idea of them being good friends. But she's just so in love with Celeborn in canon to the point that she stays in Middle Earth mostly for him. I just can't picture her with anyone else. And Gandalf I just don't want to ship at all. He's asexual in my mind.

I didn't really forgive Pearl until her mech battle with Peridot. That was her big "Look how much she's grown!" moment. I still expect her to backslide at times, but I don't think she'll do anything quite as bad as when she rebuilt the signal.
