Ugh. This person sounds annoying. I certainly have preferences with some pairings. And I personally wouldn't read a fic with Dean in a dominant role (bottom or top doesn't matter) because it doesn't fit how I see the character. But I'm not about to tell other people not to write what they want. You don't like something, don't read it. It doesn't make it wrong.

I don't think most slashers are familiar with the concept of "power bottoms." There is this assumption (which is based on a a lot of really heteronormative crap) that the person with the power in the relationship is the one who is doing the penetrating. The notion of the more dominant partner asking/telling his partner to penetrate him is completely at odds with this narrative.

Yeah, there are some people in the spn fandom who are so strict about who tops that it gets ridiculous. I've seen a lot of comments on fics where people rant about being "blindsided" because the "wrong" character bottomed and then berate the author for not warning them. I've unfollowed bottom!sam and bottom!dean fanatics on tumblr because some of them have gotten weirdly rude about the whole thing

Personally, I'm a fan of switching when it comes to Wincest (I do lean a bit towards bottom!Sam though...I have a thing for the bigger/stronger character getting fucked. Not that Dean is small by any means)

The extreme outrage over top/bottom dynamics in fandom will forever baffle me, I've got preferences sure but it's not enough to make me pitch a hissy fit over having a fic with the dynamics shifted(and honestly I like some variation even when I do have preferences).

I don't have outrage, I just am sad when the top/bottom dynamic I prefer is not used as I can't really enjoy the sex scenes. No use in complaining though, it just sounds whiny.

Oh I can understand being disappointed over it and wishing that your preference was the most common in fandom, it's the people who act like they're personally victimised by a fic not having the character they want topping that make me O_o.

But then I imagine they are just a loud(and confusing) minority and I'd bet that most people who have a strong preference over who tops/bottoms simply carry on as is and don't cause a fuss.

I've never understood it, either, but then, I don't have any strong preferences and my weak preferences* can be sidestepped easily by a good author.

*which pretty much only come down to which character I think would be more experienced with or more amenable to being penetrated early in the relationship - established relationship fics can do whatever - not which I think would be hotter, because I've never shipped a m/m pairing where I saw any difference in hotness based on who tops vs who bottoms.

I'm the same really, like I do have a few m/m pairs where I find one topping a little hotter than the other(and I can't explain why either, it just is) but so long as I'm enjoying the fic I wont care if the roles are reversed.

I have strong preferences, but that is what they are: preferences! there is nothing wrong with it happening the either way, or switching, or whatever.

I mean, I pretty much only write bottom!dean, but hell, one of the things I love about fic is there is something for everyone!

(and I gotta say, that I have mainly seen the rants you are talking about, from bottom!sam fans. scary folk)
