For multi-chaptered fics or PWPs tho?

I mean, does anyone actually read the sex scenes in multi-chaptered fics? They're usually tacked-on garbage, not erotic at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Given half (it seems) of most people's sex scenes are paint by numbers anyway, chances are most people have failed to notice, and any readers who follow you through various fandoms are giving you a pass.

idk about anybody else, but I usually skim them at best. And when they start taking over the plot, I abandon fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, if the writing is good. If I'm spending time reading a long fic, why would I bother if any of the writing is shitty?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. I like my stories and my porn pretty separate.

I don't read authors who write bad sex scenes, so I usually read them, unless they're repetitive or too close together.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sex scenes are the only reason I read multi-chapter fic. Fight me.

If it's a fic that becomes repeated sex scene after sex scene, I am likely to get bored and give up. If it's a plotty fic with one or two sex scenes in it, it will probably work fine.

I read allllllll the smut. :D I'm lucky that I'm in a fandom where SUPER LONG FICS are not the norm and the smut writing is fab. But experience in other fandoms tells me that quality depends on the writer, really, and multichapter fics can become very repetitive. I was reading some interesting essays on when to write smut and when to write around it, and it turns out I use the same sorts of guidelines (because I hate writing it but know it's narratively necessary at times) and the response to it is incredibly positive. I wrote a long fic recently where one of the main narrative thrusts boiled down to "X & Y have a torrid affair while falling in love and it gets incredibly messy", and despite the shittons of sex it only showed up in the fic a handful of times. And each time served a purpose beyond titilation; establishing the premise, showing them cross boundaries they knew not to, the disparity in the characters' mindsets when it all went to hell, and reconciliation and in sync sex when they finally managed to understand themselves, each other, and the situation they were in. Basically, smut in anything beyond PWP should serve a purpose, not there because it's been awhile and you think they should be getting off again.

The only thing I can say is that you're reading the wrong fic. The sex can often be the climax of the plot.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You've never read a multi-chaptered slow-burn fic whose plot revolves around the pairing getting together?

Even some pro erotica writers do this or something like it. I remember reading about one author who had a whole binder full of sex descriptions and he would mix and match them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily follow authors to their different fandoms so it's possible many of your readers only see the scene in a single fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume those are so generic that most of your readers started to skip your sex scenes completely, so chances are they wouldn't notice even if they read your fics in several fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, this is what I thought too.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So you only write 4 fics in a fandom, and then move on?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Your sex scenes must be something else then. (This is sarcasm.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I assume a lot of long romance series by the big imprints are similar. I once tried to make a romance novel mad-lib, like (Duke, Lord, Viscount, Earl, etc pick one) of (Charismatic mammal) + (Geographical feature ie ford, glen, peak etc) and either your readers are pretty segregated by fandom, they skip the smut, or they aren't picky. I've actually tried to find/replace fics before to tailor them to my taste and I can usually tell the good ones because find replace doesn't work with them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
You are everything wrong with modern fandom, jsyk.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing 'modern' about this stuff.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-03-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have done this before! I have a scene I used in two vastly different, unrelated fandoms, and some random person caught me, and all I could do was compliment them because boy was I amused and impressed! :D

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Actual professional porn writers do this, so you're not alone.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
must be some poor characterization and boring sex then

[personal profile] litalex 2016-03-15 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're doing your readers a disservice. Characters should still be in character during sex scenes.
