I think it was reasonable to expect it to be good. Because I think one of Rowling's main strengths in HP was her ability to assimilate a bunch of different sources and genres into an interesting, more or less coherent whole. It just turns out that skill isn't transferable and only really works when it's stuff she's been familiar with since childhood - but I don't think it was crazy to hope she'd be able to do the same thing with America. It was wrong in retrospect but not crazy.

This. I actually like her worldbuilding. Not as detailed as I'd like, but what is there is pretty good. But yes, it works best with stuff she knows. It clearly doesn't really translate well with things she hasn't grown up with.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think the world Rowling made was interesting, and it helped a lot that the sources she drew inspiration from were very good ones. But to me it always felt like it wouldn't stand up to rigorous inspection. It was like a neat looking sculpture, but you couldn't touch it or look too closely or you'd start to notice the holes, the weak joints, the wobbly foundation, etc. I think she could've done a better job with the North American part, but I never expected her to blow me away with the worldbuilding.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well we all know how much children love to rigorously inspect fiction.

I think the structure she built is perfectly well suited to the job it's meant to do. It fits fine for the aesthetic and emotional parts if the narrative and that's all it needs to do. I agree it's ultimately ramshackle but built to purpose. If she'd done the same thing with North America I'd be fine.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
But she made an absolute hash of EUROPE.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, she's British. They do that. Arguably it's a genre convention in the things she's drawing on.

I wonder what people would whine more about, NA wizards or her completely ignoring NAs or implying that they are not advanced/smart enough to be wizards.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There are valid criticisms tho people aren't just whiny

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They'd whine equally no matter what she did.

This whole debacle has made me realize how pointless it is to be in fandom. Fandom is not happiness and enjoyment and excitement. It's just wank and criticism and outrage and whining over every last detail.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know, man. I know.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just gonna ignore this and continue to read the books I know and love. Don't really care about this latest. (I'm an American and never really wanted to know how JKR's wizarding world played out in other countries--I love the books for their escapism.)

Well I wouldn't say she's terrible, but I don't think she's very good at it. The world of Harry Potter mostly worked in a relatively small sphere, i.e. Hogwarts but even then there were plenty of inconsistencies and things that didn't make sense. The more she expands the wizarding world, the more the universe falls apart. So yeah, I'm not surprised the North America thing was bungled.

I made my big comment yesterday, but I will comment on your picture that I too raised an eyebrow at how apparently cultures outside of Europe hadn't figured out wands. Magic sticks have been a thing in lots of cultures since ancient times. Why the hell would nobody but the Europeans use wands?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What do they use, then? In truth I was hoping non-European wizards would NOT use wands. Maybe their wandless magic is more advanced or maybe they have different apparatuses to channel magic. Wands for everyone is boring af.

Why do you sound like a school teacher disappointed in a student's potential or something? It's really weird.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
LOL!

"Tsk, tsk, JKR. It could have been a C plus if you'd just applied yourself."

(Anonymous) 2016-03-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Her world-building has always just been "good enough" to carry the character-driven stories she tells, and I like it the way it is. I honestly cannot scrounge up any excitement for this onslaught of new trivia unless they serve the new movies or other future stories in some way.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! That's from my tribe. Though if I had to guess, it'd probably be from Haida Gwaii instead of Alaskan Haidas. i was vaguely afraid JKR had used Haida/nw coast imagery.

I love her worldbuilding. I think she's a fantastic worldbuilder.

Was the way she did the north American wizarding world sloppy and with issues? Yes, I think so.

But the worldbuilding within the books themselves was very good. So no, I don't think you're validated.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Really? It was "fantastic"? Tell me, when do wizarding children learn maths? What's the taxation system like? How is the Minister of Magic elected? Is there any higher education? Is there any primary school before Hogwarts? How were the European witch hunts not a problem, given the overwhelming majority of people executed for witchcraft were hanged, not burned? How is being able to make yourself fire-proof a good way of surviving burning at the stake anyway, given most people died of smoke inhalation?

*Deep breath*

If the Tonks house could be hidden under Fidelius with one of the residents as the Secret Keeper, why couldn't the Potter's do the same? Why the hell are love potions available on the open market? How is it that Hagrid is never convicted of a crime, but for getting expelled from high school is banned for life from having a wand? Why are the security measures on the goddamn Philosopher's Stone so shit that a bunch of 11-year-olds can get through them? Why is the only security on the Goblet of Fire an Age Line (when, we can infer from Dumbledore's question to Harry, an underage student could just get an older student to enter their name for them)? Why does anyone ever care about house points?
Why does this page have so many sub-indexes??? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Headscratchers/HarryPotter

Cosign. Her world is fantastically detailed.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah what I dislike about her is that she just doesn't give a crap about how she writes anymore. She has Lucas-itus.
