Inspired by "I'm such a bad feminist secret"

Feminism is a Political Ideology. It's not just picking a team and going "my teammate?" +1,000,000

It actually has to adhere to the tenets. It's like any other political theory, like socialism, liberalism, neo-conservatism, racial supremacy. Just because someone is a socialist doesn't make everything that person does socialist!

I blame this bullshit on 'choice is god' bullshit found everywhere. If a women tortures someone, le gasp! its not feminist just because a women chose to do it! /rant

No it's not. The example given is absurd, but it's firmly anti-choice feminism. Which is the defining feature of radical feminism as opposed to liberal feminism.

Hang on, I thought I was radfem anon? Have I been replaced so quickly? *Sigh* being politically inconvenient is such a fickle game.

Where I stand on this issue is: A thing that is clearly counter to/destructive to feminist values does not become feminist just because someone says it is. But a woman can do an "un-feminist" thing - even knowingly - and still be a feminist.

What I tend to say is, "If that's what feminism means to them, I want no part of their feminism, I'll stick with my own, thanks." I will not say "They are not a feminist," even though at times I may feel like saying that. Because I am not the arbiter of What Feminism Really Is, and nor should another other individual be.

I also prefer to say "That really undervalues/underestimates/stereotypes/dismisses women (and/or femininity)" rather than saying, "That's not feminist." Because again, I am not the arbiter of What Feminism Really Is, and nor should another other individual be. But that doesn't mean I don't get to have an opinion. I just think it's a lot more constructive to discuss a thing directly, rather than to only discuss it in so far as to declare what it isn't.

And for the record, nothing the least bit minor would cause me to say, "If that's what feminism means to them, I want no part of their feminism, I'll stick with my own, thanks." I reserve that for stuff that's pretty major.

I like Brenda from The Closer, for example, and I think her more "feminine" traits (as well as her more bumbling traits) make a lot of people more inclined to dislike her than they would otherwise be. But someone disliking her definitely does not estrange me from that person's brand of feminism.
