Nope. I have several friends who say it does sound very much like something an American might come up with. It is stupid, but it is authentically American stupid.

In a more general point; lotta younger tumblrites, who are children of the original Potter fans, have been really relishing a way to tear down JK Rowling as standard teen and preteen rebellion. No matter what she wrote or where she wrote it about, this shitstorm was inevitable just for the kudoses of being able to attack the woman who is probably the world's most successful fantasy writer.

And I think you're spot on about the teen rebellion thing. It's like the previous generation loved it SOOOOO MUCH that the next generation has to hate it on principle or something.

there's no way they are the children of the average original Potter fan...
(for example a kid who was 10 in 1997 would be 29 now)

but aside from that I agree completely that it really resembles teen and preteen rebellion.
