Am I the only person who feels like "no-maj" was a smug jab at American practicality and general lack of subtlety?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. I have several friends who say it does sound very much like something an American might come up with. It is stupid, but it is authentically American stupid.

In a more general point; lotta younger tumblrites, who are children of the original Potter fans, have been really relishing a way to tear down JK Rowling as standard teen and preteen rebellion. No matter what she wrote or where she wrote it about, this shitstorm was inevitable just for the kudoses of being able to attack the woman who is probably the world's most successful fantasy writer.

AYRT

it is authentically American stupid

Yes! That's what I feel like JKR was going for.

And I think you're spot on about the teen rebellion thing. It's like the previous generation loved it SOOOOO MUCH that the next generation has to hate it on principle or something.

there's no way they are the children of the average original Potter fan...
(for example a kid who was 10 in 1997 would be 29 now)

but aside from that I agree completely that it really resembles teen and preteen rebellion.

I got into Harry Potter in college and have a 9 year old who is reading them now.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
does your 9 year old post hate about rowling on tumblr?

It's stupid, but it's our own special brand of stupid.

How is muggle any better as a word for people without magic? They are both silly, made up words. At least we can see the direct connection of "No-maj" and non magical.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's better or worse. That direct, no-nonsense quality of "no-maj" is what feels so American to me.

I don't think I could properly put it into words. It just seems like Brits think we're a little cruder than them or something.

I don't even think of it as crude, it is just matter of fact. It is a British thing to make some silly word to use. After all, they have all those unnecessary Us.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Well as an American, I've got to agree with you there.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
What about it feels American? It doesn't really follow any sort of American labeling of... well anything I can think of. It sounds like something she just pulled out of thin air.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
So? Trump is top rep runner, and that skinsuit wearing glob is right behind him. It's pretty apt.

Hi JKR!
