Am I the only person who likes Harry Potter who is just like "oh, she did a new thing. Huh, that could have been better. Oh well"????

Like, fucking hell, people.

I'm of two minds: firstly, yeah I agree she could have done it better/more creatively/with more research (but hell that goes for all of the schools), but secondly, she was screwed no matter what she did. It's such a sensitive topic that no matter how much research she did about Native American mythology, someone would have complained (even if that complaint was that her act of using it at all was appropriative), and if she didn't use it at all, she was ignoring/neglecting/overlooking them.

She might have won by just saying "it's a mystery" and letting the reader fill in their own blanks, but then again, I can imagine people crying foul on that too: "OH it's too HARD to include our MYTHOLOGY?!?!?" and so on.

Na, I've seen quite a lot of people not caring.
There seem to be a few groups:

1.) The people who now think she's the devil and HP is ruined FOREVER, wanking all day, jumping on everything
2.) The ones genuinly sad and insulted
3.) The people who have had problems with her writing for ages now but were always rebuked cause she was the untouchable QUEEN, finally able to air out all their grievances (many of them in a reasonable tone, some of them not)
4.) Those who don't care

I just like overanalyzing shit, but I'm neither surprised nor super offended by this.

("No-Maj", however... yeesh)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, but it could have been SO MUCH better if she's put forth some effort. It's a shame when really great subject matter is shoddily treated by an author you respect.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
NO. And I say this as an American. I DON'T CARE. Feedback is fine but the weeklong meltdown is tiresome.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
As wank goes, this has been fairly disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not Eurocentric, she's UK-centric. The French and vague "Eastern European" schools were just as stereotypical.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck that, she is anglo-centric. The Harry Potter books are a great insight into the world of a middle aged English woman but have very little of Scotland, Wales, or the Province in them. A few token characters and one of the most cliched versions of Scotland to be seen in a long time. She had a knack for names and a knack for tuning into the mindset of middle class parents nostalgic for Enid Blyton and that was it. Oh, and centaur rape fetishists.

If "no-maj" had been used in the books in place of muggle, people would be saying muggle was a stupid term if she said that is what Americans called people without magic.

My problem is with the pluralizing. "no-majs" looks terrible to me and my brain keeps pronouncing it "no majchss" or something. I know that apparently it's said "no majes", but in "no maj" I find the emphasis on the first syllable, and then when pluralized to make it flow it becomes "no MAjes" and it bothers me.

Eh, maybe. "Muggle" sounds a bit silly, but it fit in just fine with the somewhat silly, whimsical feel of the early books in particular. "No-maj" just sounds dumb. I don't see how it fits in with any North American culture at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only person who feels like "no-maj" was a smug jab at American practicality and general lack of subtlety?

The thing about "no-maj" is that it sounds a lot more British to me than it does American. Can't put my finger on why, though.

She shouldn't have gone there with the Native American history at all, tbh. Who the fuck cares if people whined about not being included, in terms of the backlash this has caused? It's clear it would have been much better for her not to have gone there.

Now I'm just laughing at people wanking over the fact that she completely ignored the slave trade and black American culture in the rest of her American wizarding history, like are you kidding me? After what happened when she tried to include NA history, is there really a sane mind who thinks she would've risked stepping on that landmine?
