Writer Thread

What are you working on? What is the latest fic you've posted? Anything else about your writing you want to talk about?

I finally finished my long (for me) noncon/torture fic. I'm actually really proud of it. I put more work into it than I've put into anything so far. We'll see what response I get, but I'm really happy with it. Now onto filling prompts waiting in my ask box.

You finished it? Congrats!! I remember talking to you about it a few weeks ago.

Yup. I finally figured out the key to my tone issues with the switching between noncon and consensual stuff. The key turned out to be the other character getting jealous, which totally fits how I interpret him because I see him as rather possessive and wanting all the attention on him.

So did you end up staying in the aggressor's POV the whole fic? I recall you saying that was what was weirding you out (as it does me as well when writing noncon).

Yup, I did. I found that what I need to do was breaks. So I asked for prompts and interspersed working on that fic with working on more happy things.

I still think it was best for the fic to stay in Mairon's POV, especially because he's the character I have the most firm headcanons about. So I knew what I thought he would be thinking, and plus he's very observant so it was possible for him to notice little reactions and realize what other characters were thinking. So I was actually able to make it broader than I would have if I'd written from the perspective of either of the other characters.

That's awesome. I love fic success stories.

cool, it sounded really involved and interesting going by the POV

Thanks. Yup, this was my first attempt at dark fic and definitely my first attempt at writing from the perspective of someone being the aggressor. I think it turned out okay. I put a lot of work into it, so I do feel kind of proud of it. And I definitely learned some new things about writing, which I can translate into other things.

I'm two chapters away from finishing my third book. Then I just need to do revisions and send it off to my publisher. This year and last were so bad for health problems and stress that I was starting to think I'd never finish it. So I'm profoundly relieved.

Oh, congrats, that's amazing. I'm glad you are doing better and are nearly done with it. I'm sure it is going to be great when it is finally finished.

So close! Good luck wrapping it up!

The summary for a story I'm too lazy to actually write:

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
A Donald Trump/Original Male Character A/B/O Barista AU.

Ahmed Gonzales, a left-winger employee of a coffee shop frequented by none other than Donald Trump, finds himself in quite a pickle when one day right in middle of his shift he suddenly remembers that he forgot to take his Omega heat-suppressents. Luckily Donald Trump who happens to be an Alpha, is there to save the day!

But what starts out as a one-night stand born of convenience soon develops into something more, causing much inner conflict in both parties. How will Trump come to terms with his growing affection for a man who embodies everything he stands against, a half-Arab half-Mexican socialist Muslim second-generation immigrant who fully intends to vote for Bernie Sanders? What will it mean for Trump's presidential campaign if news of his affair gets out?!

here be lots of story rambling. TLDR ahoy

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2016-03-17 02:32 am (UTC)(link)

Well I've been reconstructing a lot of plans for one of my original things, and having so much fun with it. My big villain has become a more interesting antagonist now that she's no longer a complete monster, I think like her better this way.

It has me rethinking a lot of character stuff and asking myself if it's necessary or how else I can do it, or why I did it in the first place.

I'm really glad that for all my RP mistakes, roleplaying helped me see some character types and traits in practice and I got to see if they really work or not (some really didn't haha).

I've kept some aspects of the character's backstories but changed a lot of others that didn't fit. I used to be so shy about changing things I got attached to, but I'm getting more mellow about it now. I have AUs to thank for that, I can try different storylines and if I like something else, fit it in the main.

The prospect of crafting a new plot used to be frustrating and intimidating for me, which is why I put it off, but now it's exciting with all the plot and character possibilities I have open to me. All sorts of character combinations I never even considered.

Lately my newest writing song is "Try Everything" by Shakira from Zootopia. I listen to it with headphones now cause I'm sure the whole house will get tired of it soon if I blast it. But it's fun and has a good message.

(PS: "But your writing isn't even good!" I know, we all know, you've said it a dozen times already. I don't really feel insulted by it. If you want something to actually have any punch, try not repeating it incessantly for over a year. I'm not going to stop writing because you keep saying this. I don't do writing because I want people to think I'm a brilliant writer, I do it because I enjoy it.)

After spending a solid month getting 8k words in my Star Wars fic I snapped and wrote a 2k different fic in an hour. Why is that a thing that happens??

36 Kudos? Holy Cats!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
So a fic I posted has 36 Kudos, which is the most I've ever gotten by a considerable margin. Also it keeps getting more, even though it's been up for two and a half weeks.

I'm not deluding myself that I've miraculously upped my game; the writing isn't any better than it usually is. But I somehow managed to hit the "sweet spot" of the characters' dynamic, it's a large fandom, and voila.

Working on a Deadpool fic.....the movie (specifically the post-credits scene) gave me a burning need to go back and reread the Cable and Deadpool run. So I did. And it suplexed me right back into The Feels about those two, so....now I'm writing it.

(I have never successfully finished a fic in my life. WE SHALL SEE IF I CAN DO IT NOW)
