(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)The place where trans issues are faltering isn't this "trans 101" type shit, it's more of a cultural acceptance issue within the wider LGBT movement. People in Japan know about trans people. It's more the fact that they don't accept trans people in the same way they don't accept gay, lesbian and bisexual people. It's "shameful" in the same manner and you're supposed to be lowkey and not talk about it.

Okama are widely accepted in Japan. I have yet to meet anyone express opinions like "oh they're just mentally ill" there, nobody thinks that, whereas LOADS of people in the US believe that. At most, people might think they're weird, and it might affect their job prospects (but just being a woman will affect your job prospects, so...)
That said, transmen are invisible in Japan, as are lesbians.
