I find that even weirder, though Catholicism is as much a cultural identity as a religious one IME so I guess it's not too out there.

Yeah, I guess you could say "I'm Catholic but I'm not a Christian" and mean something like "I come from a Catholic background and that's an important part of my identity but I don't believe it", which is quite a common position, but it's not a way I've heard that phrased before. Obviously the usual way is "I'm a lapsed Catholic", or "I grew up Catholic but I'm an atheist/ agnostic now." Most of the Catholics I know - including the lapsed ones - get incredibly pissed off about the Catholics-aren't-Christians meme (and rightly so).
