Fictional characters you love who aren't your usual 'type'

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If the characters you generally favour fall into types or categories, what are the characters you love who don't fall into any of those categories? Or are there any characters the type of which you normally don't like, but this one character...?

Batman is the only brooding loner anti-hero I like. All the others can fuck off.

Ezri Dax from DS9. Of our two Daxes normally it is the Amazonian in spirit and size Jadzia who would normally make me girl-crush, but for some reason diminutive and button-cute Ezri seems to do it more for me.

Saul Goodman. He's such a slimy piece of work and it does things to me that no other fictional character has ever done. I totally do not understand nor do I care to.

Donna Noble. She is loud, sarcastic, and loves to talk. I would usually never go for that but is just WORKS so well with her.

There's a manga, Kuro no Tantei, that's somehow turning my usual preferences on their head. I usually hate know-it-all detectives but I like the main character. Same for female characters that are hopelessly in love with the mc but Nene is too silly to hate.

Azula is the only unambiguous genuinely threatening villain I like. (I'm not a "must hate villains because they're evil and that's problematic"-minded fan. I just don't find them compelling.)

Dean Winchester

In general, I find that kind of "manly man" character boring, either played straight or as a "this is just a cover." But (plotting flaws aside) between the writing, and Jensen Ackles' ability to show the vulnerability without losing the character's edges, I find him surprisingly compelling.

Harvey Specter from Suits -- I don't usually go in for the smug power-alpha asshole of the group, but he's....just...so....nnnnng charming, and the actor who plays him has such a glorious radiant smile, I can't help it, I'm weak.

The main character in the movie Fish Tank with Michael Fassbender is another one. I originally watched it only for him and was certain I'd hate her character, because I usually hate "streetwise, old-beyond-her-years, rebellious, out-of-control teen" stereotypes, but.....dang. I LOVED that girl. Probably because she wasn't a stereotype! She was so genuinely and nakedly wounded and trying to cope in the best ways she could with her shitty family situation and future prospects....I just really felt for her and wished someone would genuinely love her.

Ashley from Mass Effect, maybe? I actually found her pretty endearing despite how xenophobic she could be.

Dean Winchester. I like more hair and usually more muscle. But for some reason right from the beginning I was attracted to Dean and not at all to Sam.

Shran from Star Trek. Archer is more my type, so go figure. My type being the main character and a 100% good guy.

I normally don't like villains but damn do I love Hisoka from the manga Hunter x Hunter.
