There's the competitive battle scene online if you wanna more of a challenge, I suppose. There's also later ingame challenges that are difficult for skilled players depending on the game like the Battle Frontier.

Suppose there's also the Shin Megami Tensei which is aimed at an older audience and has demons instead of monsters.

I second the Shin Megami Tensei series if you want something similar but more difficult, the Devil Survivor series is on the DS and it's excellent (it's more story-driven than wandering around with a team, though). I once jokingly described SMT's battle system to a friend as "like pokemon, but instead of Pikachu you use Satan."

Do you know if it matters what order you play them in, or is the story of each game completely separate from the others?
