Re: Characters That Steal the Spotlight

Tony Stark is the main reason I am dreading Civil War. They can kill Steve, they can kill Bucky, they can kill Tony (yay), but if this movie sacrifices Steve Rogers character development in place of more Tony Stark's patented "guilt, woe is me, my life is so sad" screen grabbing, THAT will piss me off.

Also, the focus on Mystique in the new X-Men Apocalypse trailer/movie is annoying as fuck. Why is she giving the rousing speeches? She isn't a student or teacher at the school as far as we know. And Fox's description of the movie, "As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction." Blecccchhhhhh.

Agreed on both of these. I've always hated Mystique in the movies (even if you are a shape-shifter, you can still wear clothes!), and I don't like what they've done with her in the reboot. I can kind of see what others are talking about when they say the same for Wolverine. I actually like Wolverine, but he's not a selling point for me either. But, it did become Wolverine and the X-men. At least he was actually an X-men. Mystique is a bad guy.

I didn't really mind Wolverine in the older X-men movies, but I just didn't like him in XM:DoFP.

And yeah, why would she not wear clothes?? If for nothing else, they provide protection from weapons and such.

Or pockets! You can't overestimate the importance of pockets. (Although, I suppose a lot of superhero costumes are ill-equipped for the convenience of pockets.) When she's doing her everyday thing, where does she keep her wallet? If she's out and about, she can't just slip something away; she has to carry it everywhere. Clothes are not oppression. Mutants wear clothes. She's just being weird (and creepily fanservicey).

It's even weirder because in the 90s cartoon she wore clothes, and pretty sure that in a lot of the comics too.

That's what worries me about Civil War, too! It doesn't help that I'm not big on the MCU in general (so I have no interest in most of the cameos), and I've never watched a single Iron Man movie (I only know him from the first Avengers film, and I really didn't like what I saw).

Yeah, IM's movies are my least favorite of the superheroes. And he definitely overtakes all the other characters in the ensemble movies.

I worry about that in Civil War, too. I'm hoping Steve and Bucky's character development won't get short-changed to make room for other things, especially Tony Stark. The Iron Man movies are my least favorite part of the MCU, and the Avengers movies felt a lot like Tony Stark and His Sidekicks to me. AoU was basically all of the Avengers (plus Nick Fury) cleaning up Tony's mess.

Either way, I'm dreading the wank.

People who hate Iron Man always say this but Steve had pretty much exactly the same amount of screen time in both Avengers movies as Tony.

But the narrative (and most character development) is all about Tony and his problems.

a ayrt rt

This. We've had five movies focused mostly on Tony and his issues. I just want Cap to be the focus in his own movie.

I'm dreading Civil War because it looks like a bunch of childish heroes throwing a tantrum over woobie!Bucky. I have no faith that it'll be any more complex than the overly simplistic, OOC, balck-and-white mostly-shite that was it's comic counterpart.

Honestly, I used to slightly favor Steve but his stans have been so obnoxious for so long now that it's making me root against him at this point (here's to Sam becoming Cap and Natasha getting her own solo films).

+1 on all of it, especially Steve's obnoxious stans.

I'm dreading the bloodbath that MCU fandom is going to turn into once Civil War is actually out. People are already being over-the-top nasty about stanning for their faves and attacking their rivals in ugly ways, and it's only going to get worse.

The movie's not even out yet, and I've already been soured on a couple of characters and have multiple new NOTPs just based on the behavior of their fans.

There's just so much deliberate, mean-spirited assholishness and so many loud, unpleasant "I own this fandom!"types, and so many people are so certain the movie is going to suck. I'm really not looking forward to all the screaming meltdowns when Marvel didn't do what various groups of shippers/character stans wanted them to, because there's already so much bitterness and butthurt that canon didn't go the way entitled fans wanted it to.
