My favorite horror movies are the Scream franchise. Any of the four movies is a good watch. A bit long if you're tired, but still good. The 2nd's my favorite.

As far as indie, uplifting life journeys go, I'd recommend The Way Way Back, especially if you haven't seen it. It's a coming of age story about a teenage kid working at a water park for the summer. Written & directed by Community's Jim Rash & Nat Faxon (who both appear in the film), starring Liam James, Sam Rockwell, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Maya Rudolph, Annasophia Robb, and Allison Janney. It's a mix between comedy & drama.
