Because some people are more interested in relationships than romance necessarily? Two characters' dynamic with each other can be a great way of developing their characters, the story, drama, and progeression. But it doesn't necessarily have to be healthy.

You can ship something because it's interesting rather than because you idealize it, you know? It's one of the reasons villain/hero(ine) ships are so much fun.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
In order to explain the appeal of fucked up ships, I'm going to riff off Tolstoy and say:

Happy ships are all alike; each unhappy ship is unhappy in its own way.

What? What in the world? So we're only allowed to be interested in pairings that are fluffy and healthy?

Do you feel the same about media in general? Should we not read books that explores any kind of dark content? Should we not play video games that contain any amount of violence? Should we shun movies that dare to show rape? Since you know, we aren't allowed to be interested in those things as adults.

I like reading about fucked up shit, I don't need an excuse for that. The taboo is always enticing to human beings.

My excuse is I'm a grown ass man who doesn't need an excuse to find the dynamic of abusive couples fascinating. So there.

Well you...pretty much explain the excuse in your secret. It's fucked up, and I like it. I don't generally want those kinds of pairings to be canon, but I find the idea of them compelling. Judge away, I guess.

"You can only like characters who are morally good people and enjoy relationships that are healthy and flawless"

Sorry darling but you're the only one who sounds too young to know any better.

I can't talk for others, but I've shipped fucked up for as long as I have fanned (cough-decades-cough). I can't say I have noticed a meme or hype either. Doesn't most people go for the canon ships?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe the 14 year olds you 'allow' to like fucked up ships are actually just beginning to realise their nascent kink for dubcon/ uneven power dynamics/ what have you. And those same 14 year olds grown into adults who STILL like those kinks, but are also conscious that IRL they would be unhealthy relationships.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't need an excuse. I ship whatever I want and feel no need to justify the reasons for doing so towards anyone.

You dislike my ship? Yeah, cool, whatever, I couldn't care less.

(On the other side I'm not running around and make people feel bad because they happen to like a ship I hate. I just let them be. Revolutionary concept, I know.)

I just want an explanation for the Alucard/Alexander shippers. But that ship alone proves this isn't new, considering how old Hellsing is.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Was it because some of the pairs listed had non-con elements, or was it for the use of the word "rapey" itself?

Shipping works the same way as any other fictional thing. Liking one does not mean endorsing every aspect of it as some kind of model for reality.

Do you demand an "excuse" from everyone who's into Harry Potter, for liking a series that contains murderous master-race purists? Do you think all Star Wars fans "don't know any better" about, say, multiple genocides being a problem?

All your ships may be healthy and positive, OP -- and if that's what you like, more power to you -- but I would bet cash that many of them are from fictional narratives in which bad things happen. Because those narratives draw your interest, for some other reason than "contains only healthy and fluffy and positive behavior."

So why is it hard to understand that some people take the same kind of interest in fictional relationships?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)

"What's your excuse" That I like the ship(s) and find it cute and (at least in the case of Bella/Edward, and arguably SanSan) they have canon backing which satisfies me, and quite frankly you're not even entitled to even that much of an excuse as to why strangers on the internet are shipping something you don't like.

I don't even ship any of the ships mentioned in your secret and this still pissed me off. Wtf is it to you why people are shipping something?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fiction =/= real life, OP. Otherwise you're going to spend a lot of energy yelling at everyone who enjoys reading murder mystery novels, because omg reading about a murder for fun is fucked up, right? Repeat after me: it's just fiction, it's not real, nobody is actually suffering because it's fantasy, not reality.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's fiction and I enjoy exploring dark stuff by using fiction, because sometimes I'm not in the mood for fluff, because some fucked up relationships can be interesting.
Does any of that matter? It's fiction, you don't have to "empathize" with me or anyone else, YKINMKATO, etc.

IME the appeal is when it reduces the nature of desire to something that overcomes everything else. To find a form of escapism in that can actually be pretty adult, considering it's a fantasy respite from our usual responsibility and natural inclination to not place those "id" thoughts above morality and practical wants/needs. But that's just one of many reasons/perspectives you're probably not interested in.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Consider this: Who fucking cares?

Do people who play FPS have to answer for their choices? People who watch procedurals? People who are invested in Hannibal? Other than a very few selection of radical people (and every fandom has them) none of these people are advocating for cannibalism, shooting tons of people, or fetishizing serial killers.

That media appeals to them, end of story. It has nothing to say about their moral compass. The fact that fandom screeches about how stupid the Video Games Are Evil moralizing Christians and other media watchdogs are, then go and do the exact same thing to other media just shows how hypocritical it is. If GTA doesn't make you any more likely to rob a bank, then shipping Sebasian/Ciel doesn't make you any more likely to molest a child. You either have to admit that the Christians were right and GTA should be banned, or that you're taking the wrong fucking choice and need to step the fuck off and mind your own business.
