I just want an explanation for the Alucard/Alexander shippers. But that ship alone proves this isn't new, considering how old Hellsing is.

Forget series from the past couple of decades -- Greek mythology proves that "interest in unhealthy relationships" isn't new.

Alucard/Anderson seems obvious to me -- it's not my favorite, but c'mon, it's a classic rival ship. Two characters from competing factions, each strong enough to challenge the other in a way that almost nobody else can, they'll get into extended physical battles, and sometimes their interest in [fighting] each other is so strong that it's hard to resist, even in defiance of good strategy, their superiors' orders, or common sense.

Give that dynamic (with any two characters) to a fan who finds both of them attractive -- and would find it even hotter if they were making out -- and you've got a ship, easy.

My only problem with it is they would never screw, just fight.

I have this same problem with Izaya/Shizuo from Durarara, but I hate Izaya as does Shizuo and he's pretty open about his attempts at killing him.

they would never screw, just fight.

That's probably a legit way to read most rivalships.

But even with characters who unquestionably hate each other, hatesex is still a thing, you know? A thing some people even enjoy IRL, much less in fic.

Who the hell has sex with someone they hate? I don't even.

...I don't know if you actually want a detailed explanation, but have one anyway.

1) Intense feelings of all kinds can heighten arousal. That's one reason some people like to roleplay scenarios in which they're attacked -- the simulated fear, the adrenaline rush, makes them enjoy the sex more. If you have strong feelings of anger towards a person, it can have a similar effect.

2) Sex and violence are regularly linked in our culture -- maybe in the human psyche in general. Look at how much pornography involves violence; look how many people will talk about being turned on by, say, a movie scene where a hot guy gets beaten up. And again, negotiated scenes where people agree to hurt each other are another staple of BDSM. So if you can negotiate a similar scene with someone whose face you already wanted to punch, hey, that's a win-win.

3) You might just have a high-enough libido, and/or find another person so overwhelmingly hot, that the physical desire can override your disdain for their personality. At least for the duration of the sex.

I have only a cursory knowledge of Hellsing, from watching what I think were a couple of the OVAs and listening to my obsessed sister babbling about it, but Alucard/Alexander seems like a fairly logical ship to me? As these things go, I mean. What's particularly inexplicable about it?

Considering they usually try to kill each other every time they meet, I just don't get it, they would never screw, just fight.

Passion is passion, and from what I understand these two are operating on a particularly potent combination of hatred, admiration, respect, bloodlust, glee in battle, and, if I've been spoilered correctly, also what might have been some genuine care and possibly grief. Given fanfic, it's not that hard to imagine something shifting just enough in the heat of battle and bloodlust becoming lust-lust for one particularly intense encounter, and on a longer term basis respect/grief/admiration/hate/passion are not so far from a kind of love, in a way. The kind of love where you fight with all your heart to kill someone and then mourn their loss once you have, but still.

Passion is passion. It didn't look like that far of a leap to me.

I guess I just see things differently.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. If it's not your ship it's not your ship.

NAYRT

Just chiming in to say I'm another person who literally does not get this shit either. Most real rival ships require a level of suspending your disbelief that I just do not have in me. One of my fandoms involves a pair of rivals who respect each other, but ultimately want to kill one another. One half of the pair even almost succeeded before being stopped by his life partner companion. While the one guy and his tactician are the biggest ship (and basically only because it's pretty impossible to ignore their whole "WE'RE A PART OF ONE ANOTHER" thing), there's a ton of stuff for the rival pairing too and honestly I don't get what is hot about a guy who literally wants behead the other guy, even if they do respect one another and occasionally work towards fighting "the big bad" together. Then there's another pairing where the one guy just legit hates the other dude with every fiber of his being. Of course that's super popular too.

I find it so strange to see fluffywoobie BS fics about either pairing. I understand that YKINMK and I ship and let ship, but it's just so alien to me.
