I understand why she is important to the gems and why pearl and greg were in love with her, but I can't help but feel that Rose was actually really awful to everyone around her and kind of manipulative without even realizing it.

I'm still wondering WTF was up with Pearl's relationship with Rose. Rose had thousands of years to work out all of their issues, or at least tell Pearl they were never going to be monogamous together. Was it really that hard to get Pearl to stop fixating on her?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's starting to look like pearls are designed to fixate on one person, so I'm guessing it's complicated?

I'm going to go with yes. It's heavily implied that Gems are very much pre-programmed to be a certain way. The fact that Ruby can fuse with other rubies and "It's still me, but bigger." hints that they're not very individualistic?

Basically if stuff like Star Wars is a fantasy story with sci-fi flavoring, I think SU is a sci-fi story with fantasy flavoring. The Gems are kind of a borg/android programming vs. individuality and what makes someone real story. (Rose's "But... I'm not a real person" to Greg )

Was Pearl fixated on her the whole time? I guess in my mind I think of this developing while they were on Earth, maybe not even the whole time they were there, and of course gems have a long view of time so it might not have seemed urgent to deal with it right away.

I kind of agree in the way that it makes me feel really weird watching the episodes with Rose. It doesn't feel like she's ever really genuine, I guess? Maybe it's supposed to be that she's obviously manipulative and all the SU fans that praise her and her relationships as perfect are too dense to realize it or something. idk, that's just how it feels to me.

I get the impression Rose tried to be whatever other people needed most. For Greg, that meant the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but he challenged that and actually got through to what seemed to be the "real" Rose. I'm not sure if any of the other Gems managed to do the same.

I kind of feel like that's the point of those flashbacks, to show that she wasn't this perfect being that the Crystal Gems like to make her out to be but idk, that's just how it comes off to me.

i agree with this and this is one of the reasons why im curious about her backstory. i hope we get to see how her life was like before meeting everyone.

Honestly, that's part of what makes her such an interesting character to me. At the beginning on the series, we only see Rose in the form of an elegant portrait and characters talking about how wonderful she was, but when we start to get flashbacks where we're introduced to Rose as a character, we can tell pretty much from the get go that she's definitely not perfect.

I really like the shades of grey we're seeing in her. I kind of get the impression that she's consciously trying to maintain an air of serene goodness and hasn't really let anyone see what's really going on inside her head.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of hard to say how manipulative she was to be honest. I mean so much of her backstory is still unknown and everything we know about her has been told by someone else. And if she was manipulative it's hard to say how much of that was her specifically and how much it's just gemkinds inability to deal with emotion in general.

Garnet: "I don't... upset you?"
Rose: "Who cares about how I feel?"
Me: That's not exactly a no...

I think that conversation was a good way of showing that sometimes people are going to have irrational prejudices, and what's really important is that you realize it when you do and don't act on it towards the other person.

I agree with the point people are making about Rose not being nearly as perfect as the Gems portray her, but I don't think that part was especially bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't think it makes her bad, but it's a flaw in the "Rose as the goddess of love, wisdom and tolerance" portrayal that you get from the other gems. In fact, it's part of the show that I love -- how every time we get to actually see Rose in a flashback she's an actual person with flaws, instead of the perfect being that the other characters talk about.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
See, I saw that as an important attempt to shock Garnet out of the Gem hierarchy thinking. Here's the rebel leader telling her that Rose's opinion Doesn't Matter. Garnet as an individual is more important.

And you can see that in the way you see Garnet really stopping and thinking about how SHE feels instead of focusing on how everyone else reacted to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily think she is gonna be a secret villain like some people theorize, but I definitely think she wasn't the perfect and wholly good person the Gems remember her as.

Also, related: I also subscribe to the theory that the ending theme is her POV.

This is a thing? I never assumed Rose was perfect and I see her as an interesting character with strengths and weaknesses...which I think is implied by the narrative. I think she's a good person, but she's not a perfect person. Also how in particular was she manipulative?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I REALLY don't want her to be perfect angelic Rose anyway. I hate the trope of perfect dead mom who died tragically and was a goddess of goodness. it grosses me out to all end.
let her be good with a bad streak or secretly warped. or bad then turned good but still very flawed.
I'd find her less creepy if she IS creepy I guess.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're building up to a flashback scene where her faults are laid bare and there's lots of tears and a song.

At the rate the show is going we'll see this maybe in 2020, after 50 hiatuses.

Yeah I've got this constant niggling at the back of my mind that, given how the show is pretty good in general at showing that things aren't always black and white, we're being set up for some dramatic revelation about how Rose/the Crystal Gems aren't exactly the 'good guys' they think they are/they're made out to be.
