Mental health help

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I need it.

I need help getting my brain in the right place to get help. I'm not seeing a therapist. I can't. I simply wont, not as I am now.

You all keep recommending CBT to people like me. I would greatly appreciate some tricks or exercises or some magical shrink approved life hack, whatever CBT would offer, can someone please impart something to me?

I don't know what I can say that will help, anon - maybe not much - but could you maybe tell us what it is that's preventing you from getting help mentally? At the least I can be a sounding board/listening ear.

Have you read "Feeling Good," by David D. Burns, M.D.? That's about CBT and I found some of it quite helpful. Please take it seriously. Even if it doesn't cure you it might help a bit!

+1

It's a damn good book and has a lot of good CBT tricks. It helped me get a handle on my anxiety. It's good for depression too.

Okay, unscrew the top of your head. After removing the top of your skull check with a couple of mirrors (trust me, do not lean forward and use just one) and see if there is a brain already in there already. 99% of people discover their brain is already in the right place, they just forgot to try using it. In the case of a missing brain, sit down and write out the last ten places you have been to. Is Castle Frankenstein on that list anywhere, that is where most of the remain people find their brain is.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Thanks for reminding me that the other thing exists.

Yes. Extremely effective for a variety of mental health issues.

Um I'm not sure why you're so against a therapist or what you actually have. But I've always been recommended exercise. Like physical exercise, going to a gym, workout, etc to help with my mental health. It like regulates chemicals in the brain.

it helps my brother a lot. He refuses to seek any treatment for depression but when he's highly active biking or chopping wood, he feels better.

Needing help but don't want to see a therapist is like refusing to drink a glass of water when you're dying of thirst. Therapy isn't something that only mentally healthy people do. It's meant to help people who've hit rock bottom, or have come too close to it. There are no magical lifehacks that will make your life better, and nobody can suggest anything that will be very helpful when we have no idea what's going on with you.

Why on Earth would you refuse to see a therapist because you're struggling with mental health issues? That's what they're there for, to help people with mental illness. Refusing to see one until and unless you fix your headspace is completely counterintuitive.

If you're this worse off, then I'd say this is actually the perfect time to see a professional. Believe me, they've seen and heard it all, so don't think "as you are now" is going to prevent them from helping you. There is no "magic trick" either. Healing comes from yourself and working through your bad stuff. CBT is something that is also regulated by doctors and is most effective with them. I truly hope you seek professional help if you can.
