How much more of an asshole are you online?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Asking the real questions here.

And does being anon as opposed to a username make a difference?

Re: How much more of an asshole are you online?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I am. Probably a little more snarky sometimes when I'm anonymous. But generally I try to be helpful and not nasty.

I'm sure some people think I'm a jerk just for being myself, and back when I used to be a prolific fanfic writer; that always pisses some people off, although I'm not sure why.

More than I'd like to admit. For the most part I'm nice and even do nice things I wouldn't normally because it's less embarrassing anon, but I still slip up and say dumb things I shouldn't. I don't actively harrass anyone or anything though, but might through a jab here or there.

I am slightly nicer and way less confrontational online than in real life, same goes for the very few times I am Anon. I just say or write things I rather wouldn't want connected to my username.

I am often tempted to be more of an asshole than I really am. I have occasionally been a bigger asshole as an anon but I don't go anon very often.

I get angry, and I don't sugarcoat things when I'm angry, but I also try not to call people names needlessly.

I'm more confrontational offline, because offline you can't hit the back button and ignore people who are right there being dumb and racist or something.

I don't know about asshole, but I'm way more blunt online than I am in real life. Some people may see that as being assholish, but that's not my intent.

I'm less of an asshole online because I have more time to think about what I'm saying, and less likely to be annoyed by what's being said because of the remoteness of it all. You can't just shut out real people and go read a funny webcomic (well, not without some social repurcussions).

I don't really post anywhere anonymously, so I can't say whether it makes a difference or not.

I am more blunt and outspoken online, and I'll say things I wouldn't dare to irl. It can be a good and a bad thing though. When I first joined f!s, I was really shy about posting under my username, but whenever I thought about posting anon, I'd reproach myself for not being brave enough to speak under my own name, so I got into the habit of posting on my username most of the time. I only post anon if I have something I think is important to say but I know might stir wank and I don't want to deal with it.

I can definitely be more of an asshole online. There are times, when I get riled, where my filter vanishes -- the immediacy of the medium makes it harder for me to think things through. I always feel bad afterwards, but, yeah.

Speaking of which, I kind of feel like I've been more of a jerk lately, so...sorry y'all.

About the same, honestly.

Not at all really, if anything I think I'm a bit nicer because generally I view interacting with people online the same as interacting with strangers irl, be nice to them because there is no reason to be an ass.

Plus I've got more time to think through my responses online so even if I do get mad I have time to calm down which I wouldn't get irl.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I try not to be an ass because I want people to be nice to me, so I'm nice to them. I do curse more online though.

Re: How much more of an asshole are you online?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not. I don't say anything online I wouldn't say in real life. Because you've still got real people on the other end.

I think I can probably be a little more judgemental. Because I can't see who's on the other end. If a 14 year old say stupid shit in real life, I know they're 14 and still have a lot to learn. I see a 14 year old say stupid shit online they could be 40 for all I know and just a dipshit.

My level of assholery fluctuates depending on the average level of assholery of any given online space.

I think a lot of people are like that, tbqh.
chardmonster: (Default)

More, but generally by accident.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-03-22 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really, really fucking sarcastic, but that's hard to convey in text.

...unless we're talking about Reddit. Half the reason I bother posting there is to trounce dumbass redpill, fatpeoplehate and racist morons. The kind of people who call women "females" like they're fucking Ferengi. But they deserve it!

It does make a difference. Posting anon gives freeeedom. Kidding.

Offline just adds body language and intonation to the mix. And also I may bubble offline, whereas online I don't like to write long posts. A wall of text post made by me is my boggart.

I'm almost never anon, but I feel that I can get a bit more cynical and snarky online than I usually am IRL.

Re: How much more of an asshole are you online?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
A bit more, because I'm generally just more open about things and that includes sometimes making negative judgments and stuff.

I feel like I'm less of an asshole online.

Probably because it's harder to ignore people trying to start arguments in person.
There are more things to be annoyed by, too.
It's harder to escape from things that make you angry.

There are people who think that being a complete bitch is my entire personality because I have no time for their shit.
If your pickup line is "come on, don't play hard to get" then we will not be forming an acquaintance. Bye.

Re: How much more of an asshole are you online?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Less, probably. It's a lot easier to backbutton away from the people annoying the shit out of me online than it is to avoid them offline.
