Good news! Time travel allows you to go back and meet yourself right at the beginning of your introduction to fandom.

What one thing do you want to say to young, innocent, impressionable, pre-fandom you?

Life isn't worth it. You should not have second thoughts and just end it while you still have the right painless pills.

Write those fics, asshole. Doesn't matter that people said your writing was awful, write them anyways and tell people to eat a dick if they want to whine about it.

I can think of better things impressionable young Aenrhien needs to hear, but that's the only one that's fandom related.

You can read smut before you turn 18. It's okay. No-one will know.

In regards to fandom, fics with porn aren't bad. Embrace them! But stay away from the YGO stuff.

The sexism and weird homophobic fetishizing you encounter in your first two fandoms is not all of fandom. Fare forward, child.

Have faith in yourself and have fun with it. It's just fanfiction, it doesn't have to be the great American Novel. But for the love of God, keep all the "dark" stuff on a private doc hidden away from everyone and the internet and don't fucking print out your smut and darkfic, are you serious?

But, enjoy yourself, that's the most important thing.

Don't get involved in a ship war, for the love of fuck. It's a whole lot of nonsense, and you'll just come out of it feeling like a moron and a jerk.

Write SGA fic. Stop lurking. Participate. Also don't record those podfics because you'll start to despise the sound of your own voice and regret it.

Keep writing! You can get better at it. Not everyone will be nice to you and not everyone will like your writing, but that's okay. Please, though, don't go around calling random things "kawaii" and acting like an anime character.

Use proxy servers and don't use the same username everywhere because one day Google will know all.

Oh, honey. While it won't even crack the top 100,000 of Embarrassing Things People Did In Fics During The Early 00's, maybe less 'clever' very long author's notes. Especially ones about how all your favorite characters were your squad (I can't remember the term I/everyone used, but I'm sure it has aged as well as that will) and you had conversations with them.

There is no right and wrong to fandom. You ship these things, you interpret this way, but it is okay for others to disagree. And it is okay for canon to not go the way you want.

Honestly I'd like to know what pre-fandom me thinks of me /now/. I'd probably give 'em a hug too because 2005 sucked.

I feel like some things in fandom were amazing, and there's one I sort of wish I hadn't joined at all because it fucked with me so much for a while.

But on the other hand, am I sorry I participated so much? I learned a lot, I practiced my writing, I put my heart on my fucking sleeve. I LOVED, at a time when I really really needed something to love.

That was good. And if I changed the hard things, then maybe I'd have changed some good things that came later, too? I'm being vague, but I have to.

Fandom had some bad things for me. But I think it was part of a journey I needed to take. And I don't know if I'll ever have it in me to join in that way again.
