I find that screenshot appealing. What show is this?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It's a Netflix exclusive about a young woman who had been kidnapped by a pseudo-cult (basically this guy kept women in a bunker by telling them that the world had ended) and is adjusting to the world outside. She's still stuck in the 1990s.

DA - despite that description, it is legitimately a comedy. It's Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, so if you like 30 Rock, you would be into this.

Well, now I am with OP in wishing it were more serious. That sounds like the kind of story I would enjoy if it were more serious.

ayrt - I'm the opposite, I feel like there are SO many depictions of that (good and bad), that doing something different was interesting to me.

Now I wish it was, too.

What show is this? Because that it what I imagine Sue Heck growing up to be on The Middle.

unbreable kimmy schmidt on nexflix

and yeah, she totally does act like a grown up sue

this show legitimately upset me, even though i really enjoyed it. there were parts that just made me REALLY sad. like when her boyfriend sneaks up behind her and covers her eyes and she screams "I DONT LIKE THAT" while shoving him away.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get that. I kind of wish there was more of the cult part in it. That was what made it unique and interesting... but so much of it acted like a regular comedy.

The sheer amount of rape jokes and PTSD jokes put me off. It's a funny show, but something about her trauma seems way too real and not funny.

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-03-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I really wish they would address her trauma as something other than a hilarious quirk.

Yeah, I think this is why I had trouble getting into the show.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't feel like they are. She's just an overall upbeat person. Not everyone treats trauma the same way and I'm tired of it being perceived that way.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I thought the way she dealt with the shit hand she was dealt was really inspiring and admirable. The show portrayed a range of responses to trauma with the other girls as well.

There were also plenty of moments that demonstrated how much the bunker seriously affected Kimmy, like the bit mentioned upthread.

As a Pollyanna with PTSD I support you.
