I don't know this author or this book series, but that is one fine looking man on its cover.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. The cover model for Atticus is pretty damn smoking hot.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the first book, and even the first trilogy. I even went to meet Kevin at an author event.

I haven't read this one yet, but it's in my audiobook "to be listened to" pile. I actually do look forward to it wrapping up with book 9.

OP, any specific spoilerish complaints about the book? I'm not spoilerphobic and want to know!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but the last book really is very terrible.

Granuaile goes from a decently likeable character to OOC Mary Sue Warrior Princess with this weird SJW (or more like what I imagine an anti-SJW thinks an SJW acts like) bent where it seems like she forgets that there's also good in the world too. They kill off a certain character. (I mention it in anther comment with a spoiler warning if you want to go look for it.) The plot just kind of meanders without going anywhere until the last couple chapters of the book.

I really hate how....un-Iron Druid the whole last book feels. :/ I loved this series at first too.

Hearne has said that he's always had a nine-book series in mind when he started. I'm sad that you don't like the direction it's gone, but this was always the direction it was going to go.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the last one yet.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP.

You have no idea what the secret is about then, so what's with the weird condescending tone? The last novel blew, and it's obvious this secret is about that.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Are the early books any good? I've been hesitant about giving them a try, but I love the cover art.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good urban fantasy in 1st person, and it follows the "Everything you believe is real" way. So all pantheons exist. It's an interesting mesh, and Atticus is a likeable hero. He's old and wise, but not perfect at all. He also "talks" (telepathy, basically) with his dog, and in some places the dog has the funniest lines.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
They're entertaining. The very definition of popcorn books, but entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first book and found it pretty average, as urban fantasy goes.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I read this as "Irish Gay ass" and thought this was a gay vampire book. I looked it up. It's not? Disappointment.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not the only person to think this series has gone downhill. What the actual FUCK was that last novel?

SPOILERS AHEAD DONN'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT:

What the heck is with Granuaile in these last few novels? I was never all that sold on her as a character to be honest, but she was much better earlier in the novels, where she still had a sense of wonder to her.

Also, that whole.......recent development with Hal Hauk, and Leif turning out to be an incredibly one dimensional baddie. He was way more interesting as someone on Atticus's side, as emotionally constipated and stuck in the past as he could be.

Blargggghhh this series really did crap out in recent novels didn't it? :( I noticed in book 7 it seemed like it was turning kind of shitty, but I tried to hope for the best.

Nope.

Thank you for being so generous with your spoiler warning. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the thank you above on principle. I haven't read the series at all, but that was well warned-for.

I haven't read it yet (thanks for the spoiler warning, other anon, I greatly appreciate it!!), but I love the series as a whole. It sucks that it ends on a low note.

But as someone who reads & loves the Cal Leandros series knowing full well it's shit, there's a great chance I might actually like Staked.

Dammit, I'm sad to hear that. I liked the early books better than the later ones, but I still enjoyed the series overall. I'll likely still read this one, but I'm not looking forward to it.
