Those are big fandoms, and the larger a fandom is, the more likely it is to have a lot of idiots and nutjobs. I don't think it "says anything about you" except for the obvious: you like popular stuff that a lot of other people also like.

This was going to be my response but then OP also specifically said they are in smaller fandoms.

(Though my inclination is still to not read too much into it, OP!)

I've kinda got a theory about that; the wank potential of any given fandom is distributed as a reverse bell curve proportional to its size.

On one end, there are the huge fandoms which attract a lot of people. Just by sheer numbers, there are going to be toxic people in there. And the sheer size will attract people who are interested in having a large audience, and also a lot of younger fen who are on their first fandom and therefore very invested.

On the other end, the tiny fandoms are so insular that even one or two wanky people can make it toxic. If there are only one or two fandom spaces, they can turn into echo chambers or hothouses of drama. Also, other people might put up with toxic behavior rather than calling the wankers on it, for fear of disrupting the one space that they have to share their love of their object of fandom.

Yeah, I think this is spot on.

The other point is that with large fandoms, you get more of a choice about whether to get sucked into the drama. I've been in both Who fandom and Potter fandom, and while I've been aware of the wank going down, I've been able to mostly stay out of it, because there were enough corners of sanity that you could still talk about stuff without getting drawn in. Unfortunately that's a lot harder in small fandoms.

That makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda know how you feel? Is not with fandoms directly, but whenever I join any, I do tend to like the OTPs that the whole collective fandom abosoutly loathes and constantly shames and badmouths any likers of said OTPs. Me and my friends have actually been seriously harasses over this multiple times, and it happens in almost every fandom I join.
At this point I've just accepted that I have shitty taste and to keep my OTPs to myself lmao.

What are your OTPs, anon?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Bruce/Natasha from AOU and Japser/Lapis from SU
Those are the main ones I get the most shit from lol.
It's calmed down over the year for both fandoms and it's not nearly as toxic as it used to be, but ugh most of 2015 was like a warzone.

Interesting. I've read one good fic for Bruce/Nat and I didn't hate them in AoU but I don't really actively ship them either. Bruce is my favorite character though! I wonder if one reason the ship got so much backlash was because it was canon and because people thought it was shoehorned? Also because people wanted Nat to be the Strong Independent Woman Who Don't Need No Man, I think.

I have no feelings about Jasper/Lapis but given what I've heard of SU fandom (which I stay the fuck away from despite loving the show) that might just be a little too ~~problematic~~ for some of them...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, I can understand why its not everyones cup of tea.
Bruce is my favorite too! (。♥‿♥。)
Another of the main reasons why the ship probably gets hated on so much, is because Bruce is pretty obviously the least popular of the avenegrs. I mean even Hawkeye has more fanart and fic than him. :( And like 50% of the anti-brutasha people Ive come across would go on and on about how terrible Bruce is for Natasha and how "Natasha doesn't need a man!!"
But then would turn around and wax poetry about how soooo much better Natasha/Clint/ or Natasha/Steve was. The MCU fandom was filled with hypocrisy and anti-bruce hate for like the whole month of may lol.

And yeah the SU fandom sure is...interesting.
Like half of it is full of really nice, understanding, and cool people, and the other half is literal radioactive garbage sewage lmao.

Yeah that sounds really really frustrating. Blargh. can people even hear themselves...

As someone who wasn't a fan of how Bruce/Nat was done in AoU the collective fandom shitfit over it was fucking ridiculous and I felt so sorry for the fans of it, you guys didn't deserve that at all.

I've got no thoughts on Jasper/Lapis however but I stay out of the SU fandom, I could probably read fic of it though out of curiosity.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.
Yeah it got pretty intense at times. But that side of the MCU fandom is slowly getting less aggressive and bitchy, so hopefully by the time Civil War comes out most of the rapid anti-brutasha people will have finally calmed down and moved on. At least I hope so.

[personal profile] nightscale 2016-03-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'll hope with you because I don't want a string of OTT Bruce/Nat hate on my dash again, I think I unfollowed the worst offenders but it wormed it's way through last time despite not initially following anyone who seemed like they'd go bugfuck crazy over it.

/sigh

Fandom amirite?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the Bruce/Nat in AoU too, and I think a lot of the vitriol was coming from rival shippers and people whose headcanons got jossed, honestly. Marvel fandom has a LOT of people who get very bitter and butthurt when canon doesn't go in the direction they wanted it to, and in general, the nfandom is just awful right now.

My own OTP is popular, but it also gets a lot of hate, and I'm expecting that to get exponentially worse after the next movie comes out.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a shitty person is achieved by being shitty. You're probably fine if you don't do this.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? So all the shit is OP's fault?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP is worried that always joining awful and toxic fandoms means they are a shitty person themself. What I'm saying is that being part of a toxic fandom doesn't mean they are a bad person, only their actions being toxic can mean that. I didn't say they are responsible for other's behaviour.

I think it might just be that a damn lot of fandoms have toxic, shitty elements.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I'm in two of those fandoms (harry potter and supernatural) and I've had a pretty pleasant time in both of them because I'm selective about the people I follow and the parts that I hang out in (I completely miss out on a lot of the wank/nastiness because it never shows up on my dash and I'll end up only finding out that it happened when someone makes an offhand mention of it). they're both such big fandoms that it's hard to call them toxic in general. I don't think it really says much about you at all that you're a part of those fandoms (well, unless you're one of the people who frequently starts shit...I guess that would say something about you)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
There are even (shockingly) areas of Doctor Who fandom which are not toxic.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
All of those are big enough that there are really nice corners too, without toxic influences. Best of luck with joining me there. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom is toxic, nonny. It doesn't reflect on you at all. You end up in toxic fandoms because there are no "good" fandoms, just ones which haven't broken out in wank yet, or fans who are in denial about there being wank.
