I have a problem where I love the fantastical elements but I don't care about the Black Brothers at all. I don't know why. I love Dany, I love Bran, I love Melisandre, hell, I'd love to read about just wildlings dealing with the Others. But I just don't care about the Wall itself. Jon & Sam chapters only get skimmed on a reread.

I don't get how Jon Snow tends to be a fan favorite when his part of the story is sooooooo teeeedious. My theory is it's because he's some kind of a power fantasy character for the average straight male reader.

This so much. I usually skip over his parts because they are just so dull. Then I miss out on what happened and have to read reviews to find out.

He must be. I hear so much about how he's the greatest subversion of male teen fantasy protagonist, and all I can do is whut? He's one of the most cliched angsty characters there is! I don't mind his chapters, but he's probably the most overrated character in my book.

Ain't nothing wrong with a good power fantasy character.

"good"

Jon's my second favourite character (I'm a woman btw). Another theory is that maybe what you find tedious others find interesting?

I mean tropes become tropes in the first place because on some level they clearly work for a lot of people.
