ASOIAF is one of the few fantasy series where I care more about the petty human politics than the epic, world-changing magic. Don't get me wrong, I love me some dragons, but I want to know what the political state of Westeros will be at the end of the series more than I want to know if nonhuman elements will threaten its existence.

Same. I seem to recall reading somewhere that GRRM isn't a huge fan of the usual sword and sorcery trappings of high fantasy, so it's not a coincidence that ASOIAF is very human and politics-focused.
