Because my least favorite time waster mess of a man professor went full racist tonight. /eyeroll

An employee at my store was fired two weeks ago on suspicion of stealing. He's still calling the store to try to talk to the manager about his firing. The manager refuses to answer the phone anymore, and if anyone else answers, the former employee is completely silent until we hang up. At this point, he's started immediately calling back after we hang up on him, letting the phone ring and ring for half an hour or so.

He's figured out now that we won't pick up when the caller ID shows his mother's name, and we can't stop answering every "private caller" who contacts our store. Two of us have told the manager to file a police report, but he's still hesitating. I'm starting to worry about how this will play out.

Is there a chance you could exert some pressure on the manager if you all got together in a group? Like "We're fed up and need this to stop now, and if you won't file a police report, we'll do it ourselves as a group."

Hard to say. One of us thinks this whole thing is hilarious, but another one's saying to call the cops, and I could probably get the other two on board. I'll see what they say when I work with them next.

Maybe your manager is worried that getting the police involved would give this person an additional grudge and cause him to escalate. And these days, I suppose that's always a possibility. But it sounds like ex-employee is making it impossible to conduct normal store business--maybe that's even his intention.

The other possibility that comes to mind (if this is a chain store) would be going over your manager's head to the next person up the chain of command.

you might tell your boss if he is worried about telling the police he probably needs to. I don't know that will do any good.

I put my hand up at one point to say "you keep saying these are problems* are 'urban education' problems, but having come from a very small and reasonably rural school/town I can promise you they're not exclusive to urban schools at all"
*problems = "kids who misbehave, are loud, are in crisis"

that's just what I wrote down. after that i just wrote "urban = nonwhite, got it" //eyeroll

Ooh that's bad. The classic ~*stereotypes have to come from somewhere*~ aka I'm gonna say that to justify my complete reliance on stereotypes! Glad you could at least argue with him on some of it haha, it all sounds overwhelming.

I recently accepted an unpaid internship. I was emailed on Wednesday last week with a list of things to do, with a deadline of this Wednesday. 1 week. I needed to do forms, get references, fingerprints, all this stuff. I call the police station, no fingerprints until after deadline.

I email the guy who sent me the packet asking for an extension. Automatic email. "I'm out of the office until (after deadline). Email (this person)." I emailed that person. "I'm out of the office until (after deadline)." WHAT THE FUCK

Well, just get all your stuff organized, send it along with a note saying 'police said blah', and get your finger prints when you can and send them later. If they can't be arsed to actually be there and/or reply until after the deadline, I'd say it's not as hard-and-fast a deadline as they think it is.

(And that's incredibly jerky behavior on their part.)

Agree with above, but also see if there's anyone else relevant to your internship in the organization you can contact in the meantime (any contact points during the application process, internship coordinator, HR, director/manager of the department, etc.).
