Nope, I went in for its 90K mile check-up and they're like yeah that'll be $700... if we hadn't found all this other shit, like your brake pads are millimeters away from being metal on metal.

Huh, really? How any millimeters?

I try to be careful about taking mechanics at their word, especially at chains like Firestone or dealerships. They'll rack up as much repair work as they can, not all of which is necessary, to make money.

Last time I went in they said I should do my brakes because they were at 3 mm. I did some research and most people with my make of car who know anything about maintenance wait until they are at 1 mm - you really don't need to get them done before then. So I waited. I'm going to take them back in soon to get them re-checked. But why change them out before it's needed? That's a waste.

That was my first mistake, I took it to the dealership like a fool. I initially only went to get my headlights fixed (spoiler alert, Volkswagens have absolute shit headlights, mine were wired wrong and have caused me a lot of problems... long story short, most auto bodies I take them to can't do jack shit about them) and while I was there, I thought, "I'm due for a tire rotation and oil check, too..." and it escalated from there.

I take mine to a dealership but I do so very carefully. And I consult my dad because he's pretty experienced at car repairs and being frugal while prioritizing safety and vehicle longevity.

Just don't ever take a mechanic completely at their word when they give you a quote - it's a good idea to ask about safety and potential damage to the car when they say something is amiss; get them to tell you the exact potential consequences of not fixing something.
