This. Beckett became such a disappointment after her initial badassery. And Stana Katic's justification for the shoes ("to be tower over the men and be intimidatin.") was not helpful.

SA
After all dies that tiny woman on NCIS:L.A. less intimidating because she's short? Oh hell no. Is Buffy or Faith? Nuh uh. It's just such a lazy reason.

"to be tower over the men and be intimidatin."

This is a bullshit excuse, especially coming from a male writer, but some women actually do do this. As a 5'10 woman, I occasionally wear heels for this purpose alone.

FYI, from another 5'10" woman, who hears what men say about women who try this, nobody is actually intimidated by it. It looks ridiculous (and obvious) especially when you wobble about on a physically demanding job as a result. All you really get is a giggle when you leave the room.

If you truly do want to intimidate men, work out.

No doubt it's because men like looking at women in heels.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But, but, not all men like women in heals! Some men (like me!!) like women with ~natural shoes at their ~natural height! So how do you explain that, feminist!?

/obligatory point-going-over-their-head comment

That being said I do think it is a combination of 1.) men liking it for sexual/beauty reasons (long legs!) 2.) women liking it for glamour and I-wish-I-could-do-that reasons (if I could kick ass and look sickening in heels I totes would! Make-up and heels are empowering!) 3.) a combination of standards set over time, audience expectations, what looks 'good' on TV, and the complete lack of realism in most other aspects of shows and movies featuring stylized action.

It sucks.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more and more glad that I stopped watching this show after season two. Jesus Christ.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Very jealous. Beckett and Castle's relationship is just terrible.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what show this is, but your reasoning seems sound to me. It'd be dumb for a cop to wear heels like that just to prove some sort of dumb point. They're a liability. You wouldn't just be endangering your own life in a situation that requires you to be mobile or run quickly, you'd be endangering your partner's life and any civilians who are depending on you to do your job.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to be a jerk, but a lot of cops are already in such terrible shape (obese) that they can't run. Granted, putting them in heels makes it even more preposterous.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Playing a bit of devil's avocado here, but those shoes don't look unstable (ie a stiletto) and some people (like me) who wear heels all the time and CAN run in them might not think twice about it.

Are sneakers probably safer if you're chasing a criminal? Sure. But you can trip/stumble/put one foot in a hole while running and break an ankle even in flat shoes.

Plus, it's a TV show. They're not usually founded on realism.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I want to see the men in heels too. It makes their calves look great.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be awesome and I fully support that.

Men in heels are totally a kink in mine, especially if they are high heeled boots. I don't even like feet at all. I just really like men in heels.

nightscale: Starbolt (Marvel: Black Cat's suit)

This always bugged me on the show. She looks great in heels for sure, but they were kind of ridiculous for on duty cop-wear.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Come on.

It's not like she's a beat cop, patrolling. She's a detective.

An actual real life detective wouldn't get into half the situations she gets into, because she's fictional and the show would be boring if she didn't. Being a detective involves a lot more interviewing witnesses, etc, than actually physically chasing down bad guys.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the time they do it because the actresses are very petite and the men are very tall; this creates eyeline issues for the production crew. Wearing heels is an easier way to compensate for that than using a Scully Box in every shot.

Sleepy Hollow is notoriously terrible for this: Abbie is too short to meet the physical standards of almost ANY US Law Enforcement Agency [as a field agent] and wears ridiculous high heels because Ichabod is very, very tall-- and he would be in the 100th percentile for height as an 18th century man.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ichabod is from a wealthy background, though, and class-based height difference were much greater at the time. While he would be in the top percentile at the time, most of the bottom of the chart was distorted through to malnutrition. It's only in the last 10 years that the constant increase in height in first world countries is leveling off.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
She isn't really conspicuously shown to be wearing super high heels, though. To me it feels like one of the necessary things to try and compensate for the height difference in filming scenes but they don't try to make Abbie out to be an FBI agent who wears ridiculously impractical shoes for Reasons.

amen

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of when Sarah Jane Smith goes to interview the scientists in the Doctor Who episode "Robot ". Her heels were 1970's high and clunky. She had to run around a lot in them too. Makes me wonder how poor Elizabeth Sladen managed to get around without breaking her ankles or something.

yup

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Becket is a Detective though so she's not really meant to be doing all that running. She does though due to the nature of the show and her character. I suspect it's more because Stana is a bit short compared to the rest of the cast and a show hero character seems to be a no-no.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
The chicks on Law&Order wear great practical boots. They can flying-squirrel-kick bad guys in the teeth. :D
