Random question. Does anyone else find the grocery store really draining. Part of it is that I more often than not am shopping with my dad who is really slow at it. My mom is better, but she's sick right now.

But even when I was living on my own I found the grocery store more draining than any other errand. Or even work. And I"m not sure why.

Going to the grocery store is like doing laundry. There's no logical reason for it to suck so much, and yet.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The actual store, no, but I often put off shopping because of how draining I find hauling many bags of shopping home afterwards the putting them away. Blargh.

Re: Question Thread

The grocery store is a trial for me, from how exhausting people can be in them to the fact that I have a LOT of financial anxiety.

When the economic collapse happened, we did a lot of poverty eating for several years. Borrowing money just to get basic nutrition, you know? So I go now, and I KNOW it's okay, we are doing much better, but it's still exhausting and terrifying. Especially if you watch how prices just keep going up.

God, I sure do! I feel like I'm there every other day, too, even though it's more like once every couple of weeks. I have to plan the trip there just right, as well: Tuesday-Thursday afternoons between 1 and 3 to avoid the slow, aisle-blocking elderly folk who come in the mornings, then the lunch crowd, then the after-school moms with kids, and worst of all, the after work crowd (when inevitably there will be only one check stand open and 50 people waiting in line). Why not Monday? Because they're busy restocking and the aisles are half empty still. Why not Friday or Saturday? Because it's slammed all day. Why not Sunday? Picked-over shelves. There are dozens of grocery stores in my area and they are all like this. It's exhausting.

I feel your pain, man. I really do.

We usually go Monday or Tuesday morning. This week we went Thursday afternoon. It was crowded. We took even longer than usual. By the time we were done my feet were spasming so bad I could barely stand.

I'm consoling myself with a drink right now.

Not really. I like going grocery shopping, especially in the nicer (though a lot more expensive) one near me where you can get things you can't get anywhere else. I like cooking though, so I think it's fun to plan for what to eat through the week while walking through the store.

I don't know, I love it.

My local grocery store also plays super upbeat music though, so maybe that helps. Apparently they tried to change it to elevator music and too many people complained so they switched it back. But I also love cooking and baking so I have fun buying the ingredients.

Re: Question Thread

Ugh, you have to make a list of everything you want to buy, and then you have to go and navigate traffic just to get there. Good luck finding a parking spot when you arrive, and all the carts will be sticky or left out in the rain/snow/blazing hot sun, except for the one that makes the squealing noise and wants to go left at a perpetual 23 degree angle.

Then that asshole won't stop feeling up all the tomatoes and just get the hell out of your way already so you can get an unmolested tomato for yourself, and the lady with the cold cut samples is too friendly and pushy, but you're just not in the mood for processed ham right now, so you pretend to be deaf as you turn the corner.

The cereal you wanted was on sale, so it's fucking sold out now, and you have the choice to either do without or navigate Customer Service for a rain check. You decide to do without.

Tomato Guy is now blocking the frozen yogurt, debating between blueberry or mocha swirl, and you silently wish lactose intolerance upon him as you sit and pretend to text on your phone, waiting for him to make a decision and leave.

He chose blueberry. Fuck. There was only one left, and you wanted it.

The checkout lady's too friendly, and you just don't want to talk, but you make the required small talk and try not to look miserable as she comments on how the mocha is her favorite flavor, too.

You forget to use your coupons.

And when you get home, you remember that thing that didn't make it on the list that you really needed, and obviously didn't buy.

I kinda like grocery shopping, but I try to go really early in the morning or an hour before closing. I hate it when it's crowded and people arguing with cashiers and trying to get their fake coupons scanned drives me bonkers.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
probably because it's something you have to regularily spend money on and not for fun. plus, usually you buy the same stuff over and over

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeees. Especially since I work at a store and even if I really need something I don't want to go back there.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Shopping is really therapeutic for me so I enjoy going grocery shopping. I have days where I'm sick or really tired but I need to go and I find it a terrible chore, but for the most part it's a nice trip for me.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It is draining. I usually go to the more expensive co-op instead of the big box store because it is closer to my apartment, has a smaller parking lot, and is a smaller buiding with fewer choices, all of which makes for a less tiring trip. I will pay a premium to not feel drained by groceries.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I like grocery shopping, as long as it's not crowded. Maybe it's because I love food and enjoy cooking, so that's how I plan out my meals. I see what's on sale, then get inspiration from what looks good in the produce section.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not really? It actually cheers me up to go to the grocery store, just seeing all that plenitude, the prettily arranged fruit and vegetables, the fish bedded in ice and the baked goods in the glass case. It's especially good if I get to see the nice cashier who trades recipes with me or one of the shelf stockers who always waves to me. Sometimes I stress over whether to buy something or not, because what if I don't cook it and it goes bad--I have a huge hangup about throwing out food that goes bad. But that's the only minus. The grocery store is my favorite errand; the bank is my least favorite.

Re: Question Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I can find grocery stores incredibly draining because it's basically an endless battle of decision making. It's never, 'I need a can of olives', it's 'Here are ten different kinds of olives and six brands of each kind and each brand has three sizes and do i want the cheaper ones or the ones that taste a bit better and is it cheaper to buy this smaller can or the slightly more expensive larger can and will i use the larger can before they go bad'. For EVERY SINGLE ITEM. Ahhhhh!

I have started to enjoy grocery shopping a lot more now that I only go sometime after midnight. 2am is best. I have the entire store ALL to myself, maybe one other customer, just a bunch of night stockers that don't want to bother me any more than i want to bother them. I can spend twenty minutes debating each item if I want and I'm not in anyone's way or thinking that anyone is thinking I'm weird. Plus I use the self checkout so I can do the whole thing without having to interact with a single person. Awesome.

I hate it. I like shopping at aldi because it has the identical layout no matter which aldi so I can just walk in, grab my shit and get out. No talking to anyone until the counter to say "good thanks" and "no cashout".

But I still put it off until I am in negative food supplies. I will make bread from scratch before going to the store.
