Titan A.E

Why do you think this film never got more of a following? I mean, the shit that was coming onto the animation scene back then and this film just kinda got swept under the rug. Why is that?

I don't really know. It was a pretty decent movie I felt.

I think Sci-Fi in general tends to get swept under the rug if it's not from the 'big name series' line of movies. So you've got Sci-Fi, aimed at children who don't get a lot of Sci-Fi aimed at them, by a lesser known animation company (The second feature film from Fox Animation Studios, and in fact they folded BECAUSE of this films failure), released at a time when Don Bluth just wasn't drawing people in anymore (Titan was the last film he directed, although he's done other things since). His last 'big thing' was Anastasia, three years earlier, and before that the last widely appreciated film was All Dogs Go To Heaven in 1989. Bluth did his best work in the 80s. By 2000, his name didn't pull people in anymore. It was also coming out at the same time as Chicken Run, which had a lot of marketing and was praised by critics.

But I am not a film expert, I just looked this all up now, so take me with a grain of salt.

Because Disney (Treasure Planet) had the marketing power even though Titan A.E. was the better film.

Yet TP was still a flop

And yet I love them both more than a lot of other Disney (and non-Disney) films.

I feel like they're both amazing in their own separate ways.

Still did more than The A.E.

That doesn't stop it from being a flop? Wince-worthy, since they spent so much on trying to have it not-flop but it was still a pretty big flop. They flopped together. Flopped on out.

It was too adult for the little kids, but too kiddie for the adults. It didn't pick its audience well enough. The mixing of CGI and trad animation was pretty jarring too.

Honestly, having rewatched it recently, I think it's just not a very good film. Some of the alien designs are cool, but the CGI is terribly integrated and the plot is pretty boring. It's also got kind of a weird color palette, which makes it distinctive but is a little off-putting sometimes.

Because of that one BNF in disney fandom who drew all the porn of it. We all kind of backed away from being associated with that.

I can't really speak for why other people didn't like it... but I just HATED the main character.

b/c Bluth's rotoscoped humans are so unappealing to look at

and the US was/is not ready for animation aimed at a non-child age group

Re: Titan A.E

It was a weird film aimed at a slightly older crowd. That doesn't work business wise.

But I loved it! I should probably get it on dvd or digital one day, because I have watched it a few times before. It is unfortunate that animation has stagnated so much.

I liked it, but it just wasn't one of those things that inspired fan-ishness in me.
